this is already confusing... and only a subset of other guides/stickies... doesn't talk about system critical IOS's that should not be modified... do newbies care about this? i figure they just want to follow a guide to get some desired functionality and not care about how/why it works... but i could be wrong.

I plan on adding to this, including what critical IOS (Menu used ones specifically) are and why you should not copy over them), I also plan on saying about vWii IOS and Wii IOS differences.
I see a lot of posts on here asking how to get "USB Loader to see my games" when they don't have a cIOS installed and only just have HBC done and think that is enough.
However, some will poopoo my idea, I think it's needed.

Nonsense. A cIOS has never been (and will never be) required to load a homebrew application. A few have used cIOS in the past for USB2.0 access, but most have abandoned that for official USB 2.0 support in IOS58. cIOS are only really for "backup" loaders now.
Misinformation like this makes noobs think they need cIOS when they don't, so they mess with things they don't understand, and end up bricking.

He said they are "used", not "required". However, this guide is full of false information (i.e. IOS is not a driver), and should probably be scrapped.
I never said it was a driver, I said think of them like one {They are probably actually more like a .dll file}, this is relatable information for new people to understand , since they probably know what a driver is.
cIOS is a "Custom IOS" IOS236 is indeed a cIOS and is required for loading and using some apps properly, such as MMM.
This is for Wii U and not exactly for OG Wii, so some things may have been fixed so they don't need a cIOS on a real Wii but on Wii U they still do.

The way I see it, you don't need to know the complete inner working of an IOS, just why they are needed, what they do (simplified) and why you shouldn't mess with certain ones.
That is all I'm looking for in this guide.... and also how to install d2x for those 100's of people that come here every day asking why their USB loader doesn't work and don't know about cIOS.

I gave you those because I think they will help YOU better understand how an IOS works, as well as what it is. They helped me.
Edit: I'm sorry if you feel like I'm trying to discourage you from making this guide. It will be a nice addition. I just think you should do some more research before you continue.

No, I said they have never been used to load a homebrew app. And that is a simple fact. A couple of apps have used them once the app has been loaded, but loading the app has never required a cIOS (and never will).
Yeah, but he said they are used to load the application, which is nonsense. That would make some noob reading it think that to load any homebrew application (e.g. homebrew browser, an emulator, whatever), a cIOS must be installed on the Wii. I know I was lead to believe that when I was first installing homebrew, and it was nonsense then, and it's nonsense now.

When I first read it it looked like it was a what's what, which seemed reasonable but has turned into a guide which there are heaps of already. I never go through guides much because they're over the top and usually give more steps than I actually needed.
I think if it's a what's what thread, the biggest difference between an IOS and a cIOS is that and IOS is written/coded and released by Nintendo. A cIOS is written/coded by "dudez on teh intanetz" (even if said dudez know what they're doing). That was not stated before and I think would be very useful information for "newbies".
And System IOSes can go above 80 because there's room. Doesn't mean they can't be used in the future.

It's kind of sad, really. I really think you've got the right intentions, yafaiz. But really...you're somewhat doing a mix of stuff on the wii and the wiiu, and then go proclaim that they're really different. Sorry, but that's just begging for confusion that really isn't needed. Just make it clear in a note: the wii and wiiu are different. Period.
There are more things like that. You make it sound like a brick is some sort of technical term. It really isn't. It's pretty much what it is: if your console can't do anything, it's as useful as a brick. As such, the question "can you fix a brick" is really a stupid question for a guide because it cannot be fixed BY DEFINITION. It's not a brick if it CAN be fixed, now is it?
