No.

@xwatchmanx: The Gamecube with Metroid Prime and Rogue Squadron III (pushing 20 million polygons, the most of any game that gen!)

No. Just like with the Wii U, towards the end of the console the graphics will be better than the PSP, and the Wii U graphics better than PS3/Xbox 360.
They're already much better than the PSP (ugh dithering).

Point taken, but I really don't think it really counts if only two early games did that. Plus, Metroid Prime was a first party game, so it stands to reason they're going to know the architecture better.

Without heading too much into http://catb.org/jargon/html/story-of-mel.html territory does maxing out a polygon count really count as full potential in graphics? Granted I am not so sure what goes with the 3ds hardware right now (the DS stuff was quite limited and depending upon the bump up from it then it might still be) so some of the more exotic techniques like those dissed/discussed in things like the unlimited detail videos.

Some of you dismiss it but remember on DS that metroid prime was one of the early games but imo its still the best looking game on the system.

Considering how at the end of its lifetime the Gamecube was able to do almost as good as next gen consoles, yes. Im pretty damn sure the 3DS is able to do much better then it can now. As is it already is tangoing with Wii graphics.

unless you're talking about Rouge Squadron or Metroid Prime, I don't think so...

It looked great but was mediocre compared to other FPS games for the DS such a Dementium 1 and 2.
Also, going by the tech demo of the Pica200, the 3DS could push visuals like these..

Twilight Princess. That is all.

If you ask me, it even looks better then Oblivion. (But to be fair, Oblivions models were only butt ugly because of the need for custom appearences.
Dude, Twilight Princess wasn't even CLOSE to current gen, even if you only compare it to the Wii. The Wii version used the same graphics as the GameCube version (since it was, indeed, just a port of a GameCube game), and if you compare Link's model in Super Smash Bros. Brawl to his model in Twilight Princess, it's easily twice as detailed and smooth.

Still next gen man, I didnt say it was better, jus close.

Also, I may be wrong be I think TP was ported from the Wii, many aspects feel they were more built for the Wii, but I could be wrong and it could just be a good port.

Hey, I could be wrong, its just thats the best comparison I can think of that can be backed up.
You could argue that Wind Waker is still one of the best looking games out there (and I would agree), but I think that's more of Nintendo being absolutely genius with the art style they chose and the graphical limitations they worked around creatively. Heck, aside from the fact that it's only in 480p and without widescreen, it looks almost current gen already.

But possibly the best example to use would be F-Zero GX. I don't think there's a single launch 360 or PS3 game that looks better than it.

The gamecube had better lighting and shading then the original xbox. But the small disc turned off devs from using the system to it's fullest.

I've always wondered about that... GameCube games always looked better to me than Xbox games, and I never knew why, since the Xbox is technically more powerful.

All consoles improve in graphics quality over time due to more efficient programming. Just compare these two shots (X360, Ridge Racer 6 a launch title and Forza Horizon, 6 yrs later).

Also, Shadow Hearts and God of War 2, both on PS2

So I guess the 3DS still has a long way to go. With lower resolution to care about (with 640x480 puts about 2 times the strain on the CPU and GPU as the 3DS' 320x240 and 400x240 screens), a visual level comparable to the Wii is not at all out of the question. Twilight princess and wind waker could be managable on the 3DS.

Well I look forward to future 3ds graphics. If it can get better than kid icarus which imo is one of the best looking games out right now then count me in. Also I hope devs can somehow tinker with the 3d so that it doesn't get annoying to find the sweet spots. I doubt it tho.

Kid Icarus: Uprising is a really pretty game (my favorite handheld game of all time), but it definitely doesn't look as good as, say, Resident Evil: Revelations.

Yeah, no. Revelations lag was because those were basically just loading screens. Since the gameplay wasn't affected at all, I'll believe them when they say they weren't pushing it.

And Kid Icarus isn't the best-looking game at all. It's nowhere near games like Resident Evil: Revelations or Nano Assault. What it does have is some of the best art direction on the system, which makes it look like it's on par with those games.
