Well, contrary to what the article says, I say it's about dang time. The 360, PS3, and Wii (now Wii-U too) have all been out too long for the PS2 to still be made. Now it can start being a retro console, and one day be thought of the same way that SNES, PS1, Genesis, etc are thought of.

Quote from the original new source found in the above link:
The PS2 is no longer being shipped in Japan
Its over. The PS2 has finally stopped being produced in Japan. Sony Computer Entertainment announced this news today.
Japan is the last region which still received brand new PS2 systems. Well, the last region out of the big three. I believe the console is still shipping in some other countries which didn’t receive it until long after it arrived in stores in 2000.
But for the most part this is a big deal. The PS2 keeps its crown as best-selling console of all-time at nearly 150 million consoles. Well, best-selling console. If we’re counting the DS then it may not be the #1 selling gaming device ever.
Nonetheless the PS2 was a juggernaut. It lasted a long time and it won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Some people still argue that the PS2 has a superior software library in comparison to current consoles and you’d have a hard time convincing them otherwise because the PS2 has possibly the best library ever.
Good bye PS2, too bad it couldn’t last forever.

The console is still being sold in South America, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and contrary to popular belief, the console still sells well. The PS2 has achieved Retro status ages ago in the first world, but there's no reason to stop selling something when it sells. Technically, for all intents and purposes the Genesis/MegaDrive is still being made and sold as SEGA continues to sell the blueprint as well as the trademark and licenses many, many clone revisions.

To think the system lasted for two generations. certainly not as long lasting as the master system was but who knows? maybe this will replace it in brazil and us enthusiasts will get plenty of good games to come.

So did they stop the production altogether? Or just the Japanese factories? And what about the version built into televisions?

Wow. It's an end of an era. Time to stock up :creep: (And hope they sell the blueprints so we get some decent clones one day.)

Wait, it is? I'll have to find one then.
There are some licensed "clone" machines, however you're better off getting the original if you wish to avoid technical issues. Pre-owned Mega Drive/Genesis consoles are quite cheapo. ;)

EDIT: Ugh! I constantly forget that Auto-merge no longer works. >> Sorry!

It's just Japan for now...it'll still be sold in the developing markets (as Foxi says). Ultimately looking at the Japanese hardware figures it's a loss of 5-10,000 units, which isn't many in the scheme of things, and not worth it when the PS4/Orbis is on the horizon.

It'll keep on selling thanks to Sony's vast distribution network....and will probably be some time before there's any other challenger for it's title of the greatest console of all time - a machine which brought gaming to everyone.

I find it extremly ridiculous in a way how this console lastet so long....
How long will the PS3 last ?

Seriously.. A Fifa Release for a 12 Year old Console ?

Still if I had to pick a console I wanted solely because everyone had one and got it in the end: PS2
Don't get me wrong... I don't actually own a PS2, because:
and I never bought one
thanks pcsx2 ;)

There are many games I still got left to play on that one...

I wonder how it will be in a few decades when the kids have all these "must plays" from SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, DS, 3DS to deal with ? How many lives would you have to have to play em all ?
