Simple guide to install d2x cIOS on vWii + backup NAND and keys
Last update: April 29th 2016
Still a valid hacking procedure as of September 2016.
(see Changelog at the bottom of the post)

What does it do?:
This guide shows you how to install cIOS into vWii (aka the Wii-mode of Wii U) and backup vWiis keys and NAND.
cIOS is needed to use backuplaunchers like Wiiflow and USB-Loader GX.
This does not enable any hacks in Wii U-mode!

Note: You already need to have Homebrew Channel installed on vWii to use this guide (use one of these exploits)!
Lets go:
Download the following package:
www.mediafire.com/?n2zl8v5kn288j9d
(Mirror at the bottom of the post)
All files are up-to-date (as of april 29th 2016)!
Note: To avoid errors, only use the files provided in this archive!
Don´t mix with other d2x-installer versions, meta.xml files etc.
Don´t worry, everything is up-to-date and the latest and greatest version.

It contains:
- Dump Mii NAND v1.2
- d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii
- d2x-v10-beta52-vWii
- FIX94s d2x cIOS Installer 2.2 mod

First we make a backup of your vWii NAND and keys:

1.) Extract the contents of vWii_cIOS_apps_20131218.zip to the root folder of your SD card.
Note: Make sure that you don´t have any original Wii system files (like wads) on your SD Card!
d2x installer could accidentally use them for installation and brick your vWii!

Also make sure that you have at least 528MB of free space on the SD Card for the NAND dump.

3.) Launch Dump Mii NAND from the Homebrew Channel.

4.) The NAND and keys dumping will start automatically (the NAND dump will be stored in sd:/nand.bin, the keys in sd:/keys.bin).
Note: DON´t use this dump on an original Wii!

5.) When finished (depends on the speed of your SD Card), the Wii U will reboot.

5a.) (Optional, but recommended step.)
Dump your IOS one-by-one to wad files for possible semi-brick fix (for more info read this thread):
I.) Download YetAnotherBlueDumpMod from here.
II.) Copy the files to your SD card sd:/apps/YetAnotherBlueDumpMod and launch the app from the Homebrew Channel.
II.) Go to System Titles and dump each IOS individually to a wad.
When prompted to fakesign the ticket or TMD, say No to both.

It's a tedious process, but it could save you a lot of trouble in the future.

If you don't have CLEAN (non fakesigned) IOS, you won't be able to fix semi-bricked vWii.
You can't create non fakesigned wads from a NAND dump or from using ShowMiiWads. You NEED to use YetAnotherBlueDumpMod.

Now we install d2x cIOS:

6.) Launch d2x cIOS installer from the Homebrew Channel.

7.) Choose which d2x cIOS version you want to install, beta52 or beta53-alt.
If you don´t plan to use EmuNAND, i recommend beta53-alt.
Note: For info about the differences between beta52 & beta53-alt click here.

8.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <56>
Select cIOS slot : <249>

9.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

10.) Press A to continue.

11.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <57>
Select cIOS slot : <250>

12.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

13.) Press A to continue.

14.) Select cIOS : <d2x-v10-beta53-alt-vWii> (Alternative: beta52)
Select cIOS base : <58>
Select cIOS slot : <251>

15.) Press A to install and wait for installation to finish.

16.) Press B to Exit.

17.) Launch newest Wiiflow or USB-Loader GX or CFG USB Loader MOD from the Homebrew Channel.
Note: To copy game images from PC to your external HDD with the correct folder structure, use Wii Backup Manager.
To fix the 4:3 aspect ratio bug of the Homebrew Channel, see FAQ & Troubleshooting section.

18.) Read the FAQ & Troubleshooting section carefully!

19.) Happy gaming! :D

FAQ & Troubleshooting:
- there is currently no Bootmii for vWii, so we use Dump Mii NAND.
- there is no Hermes cIOS 222/223 for vWii (don´t install the Wii version!).
- connect your HDD to the upper back USB-Port.
- you need a Y-USB-Cable for some 2.5" HDDs to properly work (even when they worked on the original Wii), because the Wii U USB-ports have a lower power supply.
- if HDD gets detected but no games load or HDD "clicks" you need a Y-USB-Cable
- to prevent the HDD format message on bootup, use U-Stealth.
- some HDDs don´t work with cIOS 249(base 56), so change the cIOS to 250(base 57) or 251(base 58) in your USB-Loader.
- to fix the 4:3 aspect ratio bug of the Homebrew Channel use JoostinOnlines HBC Forwarder or tueidjs aspect ratio fixer (tueidjs fixer doesn't require installing a wad to the console, it's a homebrew to launch from Homebrew Channel before launching other homebrew).
- to (un)install wads i recommend YAWMM_EN 0.5e (english Version) or YAWMM DE 0.5e (german version).
- if you want to start installed wads like VC/Wiiware from SD card, you need to patch IOS80 (system menu), use this thread for guidance.
Note: This is dangerous! If you f*** up IOS80, you will get a brick!
Only use the patch if you know what you are doing!

- don´t install Priiloader, it will brick your vWii!
- don´t install original Wii Channel Forwarder, they will freeze on startup! Use the ones from this thread. (For WiiFlow you can use the official Channel Installer)

Many tools/installers/wads etc. that worked on the original Wii will brick vWii!
So be very cautious on what you install!

Ok so when i load up USB Loader GX, it doesn't detect the HDD? But wiiflow does..... yeah it's confusing me too, would changing the IOS make the detection of the HDD work?
USB loader will act like it doesnt detect it.

When it waits and does the countdown you can let that run out or just push B to cancel and it will load it. The first time it might take a while but after that it will come up really fast. I thought this too as well when I ran into this situation.

sorry, it is plugged int he back side, but i meant looking from the front side of the WiiU. which USB Loader GX should I use. also, how do i change the cios, i haven't done cios stuff in a long time so i can't remember at all
Use a USB loader GX that is 3.0 r1138 or later.

The usb loader GX's already had vWii support. (Read somewhere where it was going to be updated to be compatible.

How to change IOS for individual game:

USB Loader GX:
-Click the game
-go to settings
-Click game load
-Scroll down till you see "Game IOS Use Global"
-Click on that and erase the "-1"
-Then input 250 or 251 (individual games differ from others)
(USB Loader GX also has to start in 250 only) (haven't tested 251)

On your SD card go to
Apps -> usbloader_GX -> GXGlobal.txt
Then use find (Ctrl+F) and type in "IOS"(make sure to have the blinking cursor at the beginning of the text)

you should see "ios = (whichever ios you've been using) change that to "ios = 250 and you should be good to go.

Wii Flow:
-Click the game
-Click the gear
-Go to page 4
-Change IOS to 250 or 251

I never got Wii Flow to work so the rest is up to you.

I've tried d2x beta52 and 53. So far whenever I launch a game it just goes black for a bit then kicks me back to the home screen using WiiFlow and GX. Tried loading games using AutoIOS, 250, 251.
Ideas anyone?

You don't need to change the IOS for each games one by one in USBLoaderGX.
You know you can do it globally in the settings > loader settings > Base IOS
or like you said, editing the GXGlobal.txt manually (it will change the global IOS, no need to change it individually for each games).

The loader is released in 222/249/250 only, but you can choose any slot for starting the loader by editing the meta.xml to accept arguments if you want the loader to load from 251.
This one is only used to start the loader (detect the HDD & SD), then it will reload the Global IOS from the config files.

If all the base IOS of the d2x vWii v10 (r52) don't work, try the d2x vWii v10-alt (r53)

and 3.0 is r1180
latest beta is r1207 mod01 (fixing some bugs from 3.0, like theme download. But if you don't use it then 3.0 is fine for vWii)

I used the dx v53 beta alt and have an externally powered 1 TB USB 2.0 HDD plugged in the upper port on the backside of my wiiU

USB loader GX detects my HDD but doesnt show any of the games. The plate worked fine for the Wii.
I tried changing the base IOS in GX too, but nothing helped.

Wiiflow doesn`t detect the games either.
Tried WBFS and NTFS.

So, what options have I left?

Which "base IOS" did you try?
All three (56/57/58) for each d2x and d2x-alt?

installing all three bases, then testing all three of them in the loader's settings (and meta.xml for GX)?

249, 250, 251, with d2x-alt, changed them only in the settings and restarted the loader to see if he`d load the right ones.

I`ll reinstall 249/250/251 with d2x 52 now, can I just install again without brick risk?

you can reinstall IOS many time, it overwrite the previous one.

If GX detects the HDD then you don't need to change the IOS in the meta.xml
but if it doesn't find the games once loaded, I don't know what's wrong. You correctly have the "Wii Game" selected as Source in the 4th icon of the toolbar?

Nice tut Truth. Thanks for taking the time to update it.
Something wrong with my installation tho. I followed your tutorial, i tried with 2 HD(1 need to be plugged) and 1 USB key. All my games are showing. I can lauch every games. But when im playing, as soon there is a cutscene, the game freeze. For example, tried Monster Tri and Mario Galaxy and both freeze at the same place with any usb drive i play. Both Wiiflow and GX are working but i have this freezing problem all the time. With New Super Mario Bros. I played for about half an hour and no freeze.(theres not many cutscenes in this game).
I tried both d2x version 52 and 53 and both will do same result.
Do you think its a cios problem (did try switching from 249 to 251) or a HD problem? But if its the HD wouldnt i be able to lauch the games ?
Im a bit confused here. Hope someone can help.
My HDs were format with WBFS and those are my backup games from my wii. But i backed up Tintin and same result. So i know this is not because bad rip.

You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.
