I haven't found an answer to this very simple question: can the Wii Mini be softmodded with ModMii, and is it possible to load backups with a USB HDD?

I assume nobody has examined it yet. It's only available in Canada if I read well. Maybe the sd card connections are available on the motherboard, and once it's modded it should work fine without sd card. I even haven't found pictures of the inside on the internet yet. If the firmware on the internal nand flash is the same as a normal wii, it might perhaps be doable.

And could I plug my old Wii Clip on the Wii Mini? I don't think this requires the HBC, only the regular disc channel (and burnt discs)

Probably not, the wii mini disc drive surely uses a different drive chip, but I don't really know what I'm talking about :P

omg what a turd. why would you buy this for $99 when a used Wii is the same if not even cheaper on craigslist or something like it? I've got two Wii's for $50 USD a piece.

Maybe he got it as a chrismas gift. You can't blame him for that.
I'd be very disappointed if I had this as a christmas gift. I think this is the only kind of Wii you can find new in retail store in Canada now. Nintendo is disrespectful to canadian consumers by shoving this POS down their throats. Lucky we can still find used old Wiis. And they should get easier to buy very cheap over time as the Wii U replaces the old Wii in more living rooms.

Im certainly hoping this will be hacked at some point. There is a USB port on the back though I am not sure if it is for just powering peripherals or if it is capable of any type of data transfer. My original Wii from 2006 launch day had tons of issues with a disc drive that kept getting noisier until it finally burnt out in the end of 2011. I have a Gamecube and all the Nintendo and Sega systems so virtual console was useless to me anyways as I had a large library of games pre 2006. Wi-Fi was always a joke on the Wii and I have yet to play an online game that runs well on it. I picked up the mini because I have no need for 2 machines that play Gamecube games and the system is a good deal, especially considering that new Remotes and Nunchuks still go for 60$.

I just want to be able to play Project M on my mini but am not sure if that will ever be possible. Most devices do get hacked but this might be to obscure of a device for hackers to bother with.

Wow... so the Wii mini removes:
  • SD Slot
  • Any ability to connect it online at all, meaning you'll never be able to have more than the channels it came with
  • Support for anything other than the composite cables it came with
Dafuq, man? That's just horrible.

I thought the Wii revision that removed GameCube slots and ports was bad enough... I wonder what happened in Canada to piss off Nintendo so badly?

Maybe OP isn't fortunate enough to own every technological wonder in the world that's available for the average consumer to purchase. I know I sure as hell am not that fortunate despite having what I do.

And Nintendo isn't shoving anything down anyone's throats. Nintendo isn't forcing anyone to buy it. They can't stop secondhand sales and imports. They're shoving it down Canadian consumers' throats about as much as Apple is shoving the Lightning connector down mine. (Hint - I'd buy second hand, or just not own Apple devices in the first place)

Well, I don't own any Apple devices, myself, so, can't say anything about that. Of course, no one is forced to buy a Wii mini. Some consumers do prefer to buy new (and never buy used stuff). These don't have a choice, unless they import from the US, which would be a viable option if they're wealthy enough never to buy used.

What is the point of buying a Mini over a normal Wii?
If it's the only option available, getting it as a gift or perhaps the size of the thing. If you could hit a USB HDD and use USBLoaders to boot the games, you'd basically have a miniature Wii. If you want to play Wii games and don't care about the rest (WiFi, GC, Channels, etc), why not? It's not like the Wii offers anything spectacular in the online section :3

What is the point of buying a Mini over a normal Wii?

If you own classic game consoles and a Gamecube then the Wi-Fi/GC enabled Wii offers nothing, this saves you 30$. The top loading disc design makes it easier and simpler to change games than the slot loading drive (which is what failed years down the line on my launch Wii). I enjoy being able to swap in games without having to turn the machine on. Also, the system's design and red remote/nunchuk look very sleek. The Mini itself looks like a famicom, the design reminds me of classic Nintendo in general.

If you are a big gamer like me, those are the reasons to consider the mini. Also people say that the Mini is pointless when used Wii's are less, but we are comparing new systems. If you are a casual consumer, the Mini will be the best option hands down. Of all the millions of Wii's that sold in its first few years, I doubt that even 1 tenth of Wii owners used the Gamecube functionality. Until Netflix came out on the system, pretty much no one used the Wifi. If the mini option was available from the start (regular 250, mini 210), I am confident that more minis would have sold than Wi-Fi enabled systems.
