Making digital copies of music, films and other copyrighted material for personal use is to be made legal for the first time under government plans.
It has previously been illegal in the UK to rip songs from a CD to a digital player or transfer eBooks, music, films and games from one device to another.
But people will still not be allowed to share the copies with others.

Personally I thought we already was ok to backup stuff, however seems we can soon do it legally.

That law always struck me as especially retarded, so I'm glad to see it dealt with. For starters, if it's illegal to rip music from a CD, then why does Windows Media Player have a 'rip audio from CD' option?

Because Media Player wasn't created with the UK legal system in mind.

It's just a very late update to our legal system in respect to the move towards digital. This just puts it in writing, whereas before it may have been "illegal" but you'd never have been prosecuted for ripping your CD's for personal use.

I wonder what the law says about ripping Youtube vids for personal use. I have limited net access so I download stuff like Nostalgia Critic, AVGN, etc. Since I never pay anything to watch this stuff anyway and nobody makes any money out of me watching it either way, my way of looking at it has always been a 'no harm, no foul' sort of deal.
