Hacking I have a new 3DS. Need a little help with my flashcards.

Nintendo 3DS Ver. 4.1.0-8U

Flash cards:
1) R4i GOLD 3DS Revolution for Nintendo 3DS (Revision C)
2) Acekard 2i for 3DS / DSi
3) Supercard DSTWO for 3DS / DSi XL（LL）/ DSi with EOS

I just bought everything above. Note that I will be giving this system to my 12-year old son. I just want to get everything working first. Just one card for him is enough, the other two are extras. I was hoping to give him the R4i card.

For the past half hour, I have tried updating the R4i card with the latest software from r4ids.cn in order to then upgrade the version on my 3DS to 4.5.0 and have the card work, but I cannot do it. When I try, I just get "FAIL." Can I do this update with my 3DS or do I need a DSi or DSLite? The readme file sort of implied I could do this with my 3DS alone.

Most importantly, how often does Nintendo ask you to update the software? If it is not often (or never) I can simply give my son the system with the current version and have everything work fine, right? (I have already tested it and the NDS games work on the 3DS with my R4i card.) What I worry about is that he will update it (either on purpose or by mistake) if he gets a popup from Nintendo or something. What should I do?

there are certain version C's of the r4i gold 3ds that arent compatible yet with the new update. If you update the card to be compatible with 4.4.0-10, and the icon is Metroid, then you are in the same boat as me. Gotta wait until there is another update.

Yes, in the majority of cases a higher update cart works just fine on an older one.

Nintendo wants you to update for new 3DS games (they sometimes need a certain firmware version), and internet stuff like the eshop.

yes, the card will work fine.

Okay, I upgraded my R4i card to support 4.4.0 and the update succeeded, but when I rebooted the system, I still had Metroid as the icon for the card. That means that my card won't work with 4.5.0? That sucks. The website I bought it from (can I mention it here?) advertised it as working with 4.5.0.

I think the easiest solution is to just leave the system at version 4.1.0 and tell my son to not update it, and hope for the best. Do you guys agree? Or should I attempt to get the DSTWO card to work with 4.5.0?

The 4.5 update isn't out or working for all revisions yet, lots of people still need to wait for the update for their model (which is why most updates are still to 4.4, they pulled the original 4.5 from what I read since it was broken).

Update the DSTwo just in case. Your son is likely going to update it. They always do. I can't tell you how many times we get "My son/daughter updated the system and now nothing works" threads...

you shouldnt have issue getting the dstwo card updated i dont think....

i also think r4ids is working on getting the metroid revision C working soon

Thanks for the replies guys. I tried to update my DSTWO card but it's not working for some reason. I tried a bunch of times, in the end tried what is written on this page:

..and every time I get "NO FIND SYSTEM FILES" so that card doesn't work at all. All the files are on the MicroSD card though.

Do you think the update for my revision of the R4i gold card will be out before Christmas? If yes, I'll wait for that. I'd rather have him use the R4i card because the DSTWO looks too advanced for him, especially with all the cheat options. R4i is simple.

Thanks Rydian. I got it to work with those instructions. Is it normal that, when using the DSTWO card, and I press HOME to go back to the 3DS home screen, the screens just turn black and nothing happens? Even turning the unit off doesn't really work right away, it takes about 20 seconds. This happens almost every time.

Also, when playing a game off the DSTWO card, is there a way to go back to the main DSTWO menu instead of needing to go back to the 3DS menu? (since that obviously doesn't work for me)

No it's not normal, it sounds like a MicroSD/contact issue.
