You guys just don't get it, no one is expecting MK to be Gran Turismo. MK is supposed to be mindless fun, the blue shells make it FRUSTRATING, ruining the FUN, it's still an easy game (against the AI at least) but that's not the point.

How is that so hard to comprehend? I understand you (and other people with similar comments) don't feel that way but the least you guys could do is understand my (and others) point of view before mocking us.

This isn't directed solely at you by the way.
Meant to be a fun racer, blue shells ruin that fun. It's no fun getting blue shelled over and over just because you are better than the other players. If it only spawned occasionally it wouldn't be so bad, but it's far too common. It's pretty much if you are in first, you are going to get blue shelled. Not a case of if, but when. Only so many times you can get hit just before the finish, before it just sucks the fun out the game. They could at least make it so it only spawns on laps 1 & 2, so you have a chance to recover.

I was playing online earlier, I took two blue shells. So because I've managed to escape the pack, my reward is too get whacked twice by a weapon that requires a huge amount of luck to dodge (having mushroom at the right time).
This and this. I don't see why it's so hard to understand. I'm not saying Mario Kart should be F-Zero, just that it should tweak the one thing that's absolutely annoying and breaks the game for many people, myself included.

The one other thing I forgot to mention was the post-hit invincibility. In MK64, you were invincible for a moment after getting hit. Whereas in MK7, you get hit by one shell/attack, and if you have bad luck, you get spammed by like 3 or 4 attacks within seconds of each other, turning your half-lap lead into 6th place, which is ridiculous.

So yeah, tweak the blue shells, and post-hit invincibility. I don't see how that's demanding Mario Kart to be a "balanced" hardcore racer, considering there are so many other things that are "unbalanced" about it that I and others don't want changed.

Does this game give you a grade (like A, B, C, D or whatever) like some of the Mario Kart's have done like the GBA "Mario Kart: Super Circut" (is that the real name?)

That made it REALLY annoying to get a 100% completion. I mean even if you get 1st place on every track and get the gold trophy you STILL might get a B or something just because you didn't finish in the "appropriate" time. With as much "luck" that goes into each level, this is a total BS design. ANYTHING can happen. So it is extremely difficult to get those A's unless you just have a perfect run AND get lucky. And I'm not going to play those courses over and over waiting for that perfect scenario.

So does this game do that? Can you think of any other games in the series that did that? I've played nearly all of the games in the Mario Kart series with the exception of Mario Kart 7, and I don't remember seeing this in the other games. Mind you, I only played games like Mario Kart Double Dash and the Wii one. (Wasn't Double Dash Gamecube?) Ahhhh I'm getting all confused. On many of those more recent games (especially the console versions) I never really played them till full completion. I mean the Wii one was WAY too complicated in terms of 100%'ing it. And I just don't have the patience anymore to play those games, mainly because they're just not that...welll....fun.

Learn to play the game then lol. It's not that hard. If you're constantly getting hit by Blue Shells, you're doing it wrong.

You're doing it wrong by not being lucky enough to have a mushroom at the unpredictable time someone throws an otherwise unavoidable blue shell at you?

Sigh -_-

The fact that he suggests you do something counterintuitive to the game (and often impossible, especially in multiplayer matches with smarter human players) and have a friend watch the bottom screen for you kind of proves my point, methinks. But hey, it is something. For the sake of fairness, I suppose I could at least try it out. ;)

Counter intuitive to look at the screen? It's a tactic, no idea what you are talking. Also, multiplayer is debatable. Whenever I played online in races, it wasn't that hard for the tactic to still work. I'm not saying it's AS easy, but still works none the less.

I was referring to dropping out of first place. Sorry, I didn't make that clear.

And since I haven't really tried it, I'll just take your word for it regarding multiplayer.

Not really counter intuitive if you think about it. If you get hit, you lose a lot more time. However, if you drop out for a split second, you easily get back in first. Sounds pretty damn smart to me. Racing just means to finish the finishing line first. It doesn't mean you have to be in first the entire race. After all, haven't we learned anything from the Tortoise and the Hare?

Simply falling off of the map about 5 seconds before the shell would hit me usually works. Lakitu is dropping me back in place at about the time the shell would have hit me and I can time the acceleration press just right to get a small boost. Typically works great and keeps me neck and neck with the guy in 2nd who passed me.

ShadowSoldier, the dude in the video says and I quote "yeah, it's a giant pain". That pretty much says it all, you shouldn't need to go through a "giant pain" every race just to have a decent race. Online I don't care because that's how online games work, finding the best tactics and strategies, no matter how weird or counter intuitive they might be just to be competitive at the game, I think that's just fine in an online game and I don't mind doing that when playing online and wanting to win.

However, in single player you're supposed to be having fun, constantly watching minimap just to drive out of 1st and then back in... It's not hard but it's counter intuitive and not really a fun way to play, like people said, MK7 is not THAT kind of game.

I mean, I can appreciate when people think of creative ways to avoid stuff like blue shells, for "professional" competitive purposes. But I definitely feel it's an absolute hassle that shouldn't be required just to win a standard, friendly game, 1 player or multiplayer. To me, it's kind of like wave dashing, helplessness cancelling, and other awesome tricks for competitive use in the Smash Bros. games. The main difference is, you can still have a pretty decent chance of winning without those tricks in Smash Bros, at least if all players decide not to use them. However, in Mario Kart 7, you basically HAVE to do that to win in many cases. It's a bit like tripping in Brawl. Sure, there are ways around it, but they're counter intuitive and tedious, and generally break the competitivity and accessibility of the game.

I wouldn't be so pissed of with the Blue Shell if the really pro gamers didn't know how to avoid it. It's ridiculous they finish the race much before everyone else and they still manage to avoid blue shells, the only thing capable of stopping them.

EDIT: BTW, they do always have a mushroom as a second item for that matter. One time it took two blue shells almost consecutively just to stop one pro gamer.

I don't see what's wrong with good players being able to avoid them, personally. I'd rather have them pro-avoidable than not avoidable at all.

Well, maybe I'm just butthurt. :P

I literally played the game just after it was launched regularly for a year and this sums up my beliefes at MK7:

Everyone worst than me is a noob. Everyone better than me has no life.

EDIT: Don't know why, I couldn't post a image...

Except it really isn't a big pain at all. I mean, at first it might be (it wasn't to me), but then it quickly becomes like a second skill, an awesome one. I mean, what, you get hit with Squid ink, you have to look at the bottom screen anyways, so why not look at it every couple minutes to see what your opponent has? And again, it's not counter-intuitive. Like I said, you lose, maybe a second, then within a second you're back in first. Would you rather get hit and go all the way down to 5th place and have trouble getting back, because you refused to look at your small screen for 2 seconds and refused to go back down to second place for a second? It's a strategy, not counter intuitive at all. There are plenty of times in all the races where you can look down on it especially on straightaways when all you're doing is driving straight holding the A button.

So as we seem to have a load of Blue Shell avoidance experts here and as they are easy to dodge and perfectly fine, how do I get out of this situation, as it happened three times tonight.

Third lap, nearly finished, Blue Shell appears. I'm not close enough to make it across the line before getting hit, but I'm also not close enough to the pack of racers to back up and let someone else in first before the shell locks to me.

Choices to me seem to be either, go for line, take the hit. More than likely get hit by the other racers weapons as well, unless luck shines on me and they have used them all attacking each other. Even if they have, they will more than likely have passed me, by the time I stop bouncing and get back to speed.

Drop back, blue shell will still get me and I'll be in the pack of racers again and have no weapons to defend with.

Obviously as they aren't a problem and are easy to avoid, there must be a third option I've overlooked, to avoid it and keep 1st place.
