You got a good point there: the firmware version or region isn't mentioned yet.

Thus far, there is only one firmware version that allows for these exploits: firmware 2.0 (the original firmware doesn't allow for wii playback). So that part is covered.

I haven't read a confirmation yet that it also works on the European versions of the game, but chances are high. The best answer is still: just try it out. It won't hurt to try. :)

I'm actually not convinced on this. We know that if an update is available and the Wii U is connected to the internet, it locks you out of Wii mode until you update. Has anyone actually tried to launch Wii mode with a v1.0.X Wii U that has never been connected to the internet?
Confirmed, see post below.

Yes. I did. All it said when clicking the channel was a simple error message. Something in the likes of "this channel is not available right now".

No problem. :)
With all that reading about it and people not knowing for sure, it was one of the things I just had to try before updating. ;)

I got to admit it was a bit of a coincidence that I didn't even connect it to the internet before trying. But that way, I'm also 100% sure that everyone without wireless network simply CANNOT play wii games*.

*until ninty rolls out machines with later firmwares, obviously.

I sort of suspect they won't ever ship consoles with Wii mode installed. They are going to block Wii mode if there is a Wii U mode update available, so I suspect they are trying to ensure that they can always prevent Wii mode exploits. It seems obvious then, that if they ship any consoles with Wii mode installed, you could always go out and buy a "new" old console. If they never ship a Wii U with Wii mode, then once an update is released (and you are connected to the internet), you are just shit out of luck (unless you can find a pre-owned console that hasn't been connected to the internet sine the update, which would be exceedingly hard to find).

That's the second time I've seen this mentioned, how exactly are they going to block Wii mode if there's an update available for the Wii U? And what's the source for this? What's stopping anyone from blocking the update server using a proxy or something?

Sure, if you block the Nintendo server you will be fine, but this will likely block you from playing new games (that require the update), or downloading anything from the eShop (since they are probably on the same server). Basically, if an update is available and you decline it, you won't be able to Wii mode until you update. It's possible that this is just a rumour that was started because of the day one update thing that unlocked Wii mode, but I have heard this from enough people that I trust to believe it until proven otherwise. I would love for this one to be proven wrong, as it means that if you want to keep Wii mode vulnerable, you basically need to never connect your Wii U to the internet.

I have System software version 1.0.1e and can reboot into Wii mode. I have not tried a wii game disc channel as I don't have any [awaits Smash Bros Brawl in the post].
I have not had console connected to internet yet.
It might be that I can't run the wii disc channel but I can definately reboot into Wii mode.

Are you sure your wii U didn't update automatically? Check system settings.

I could also boot into wii mode before i updated. Just didn't choose any wifi when setting the wii U up, but I did not try to play any wii game. But why wouldn't that work?

I must make the choice soon to udpate to 2.0.0e or not, guess that if >2.0 comes out I will be unable to take anything less than the latest via online update.
Exploits are confirmed on 2.0.0 but I have in my mind somehow that 1.0.1 might be more of an opportunity for progress and would hate to make the wrong move now.
My system is definately 1.0.1e with Wii mode reboot working, regardless if this is not expected as true.
