Have we reach a point in pretentious hipster gamedom that we consider "Being like Zelda II" a positive?

Revisionism innit. Like how the N64 is now regarded as a titan of consoles despite having a limited library. Or how Monster Hunter and Dragon Yawn are now seen as a great franchises because they're popular in Japan.

In August 2008, Nintendo Power listed it as the 12th best Nintendo Entertainment System video game, describing it as a radical and refreshing departure from its predecessor. Play magazine praised the unique gameplay, saying that "it's this combination of unique elements that creates an action-RPG experience unlike any other". Nintendo Power said that the game was "an entertaining and natural step in the franchise's evolution," and awarded it the Nintendo Power Game of the Year Award for 1988.

I've only played like 10 minutes of Zelda II myself, but I think there's a serious misconception that most people consider Zelda II to be a bad game. The only people who've played it that seem to consider it a bad game do so because they think it's ridiculously hard (and it is!). Majora's Mask was criticized similarly (too hard, too much of a radical change from it's predecessor), but tons of people consider it a masterpiece.

This.
If Zelda II was good then Nintendo would make their Zeldas like Zelda II.
Link's playstyle is Smash Bros. is largely borrowed from Zelda II (and no, I don't just mean the side scrolling). Also, a lot of people consider the RPG-like upgrade system for weapons in Skyward Sword to be very Zelda-II like, and they mean that in a positive manner. Just saying.

The "RPG-like upgrade system" in Skyward Sword was shit though.

And I think being Link inspired his combat in SSB.

You sure about that? The vast majority of his sword-based moves are all BUT frame-for-frame recreations of his attacks in Zelda II (the various thrusts, especially his air-downward thrust, in particular).

Yeah, oddly enough, I found that "debatable" point in one of the comments about Adventure Time DS... found on the temp... I can't understand why that would be regarded a "plus" either, Zelda 2 was widely-considered a black sheep in the family...

Makes you wonder about the extent of influence the press has on people - magically something bad was made a symbol of good only because it's old enough for younger audiences to refrain from double-checking.

EDIT: Ah, there's the infamous culprit!
Alright, so I think this is going to be a really interesting game. The gameplay seems very similar to that of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, which automatically gets a thumbs up in my book.
I almost dropped it when I read it. It's like saying that the game is like jamming glass shards under your fingernails, which automatically gets a thumbs up in your book.

If you don't think [Insert Game] is the pinnacle of gaming, then you're just a filthy casual that should stop playing Call of Duty and pick up a real game. Trufax.
[Insert Game] was a absolute masterpiece, a shining beacon of hope in a time when good games are so time to come by. And coming soon [Insert Game]^2, its going to do all those things again just you wait damnit.

Even then, how does this make Zelda II a good game?
I never said it did. As I mentioned before, I only played Zelda II for about 10 minutes (I never cared much for Zelda 1 or 2, even though both are still on my to-do list). I was just showing how your statement "If Zelda II was good then Nintendo would make their Zeldas like Zelda II," just doesn't work as an argument.

My closing point is that, while Zelda II is undeniably the black sheep of the family, quite a few people consider it to be an underrated gem in the series, so it makes perfect sense why, at least to the person who wrote the review you screen-grabbed in the OP, this might be considered a plus. You can't just take a look at something that you or most people consider to be bad, and have it automatically be considered objectively "wrong" when someone in the minority says otherwise. It's apparently someone's personal opinion that Zelda II is a good game, nothing more. I don't see what's so bad about that.
