The local walmart has been sold out since launch, as I'm sure other retailers have been as well. I thought about trying to order one online, but even legitimate places like Amazon want an outrageous amount for one. Has anyone else had better luck online? Could one be ordered directly from Nintendo?

Called all local Targets, Walmarts, ToysRus, Sears, BestBuy, no luck. I did get on a waiting list at Gamestop though. I'm number 42, so I'm not too sure how good that is, but for now, it's my best hope.

A good tip I got from a Target employee was that the best way to get the black model is to go on Wed. Apparently, they restock on them then.
Walmart also has an online only deal for a White Wii U. It's not sold out yet. For 360$, you get the White Wii U, and any game you want. Hope that helps.

if you want to try maybe Thursday-Monday , you might able to find one
if you get there at the right time(VERY early)
some places might be holding on to some for that time OR they might get a new stock for the big sales days

Don't know about you, but I'm waiting for at least until Christmas. You should be able to get one if you wait for most of the hype to die down in a few weeks or so. I don't think you can order one directly from Nintendo, but it's worth a try calling Redmond and asking nicely.

Have a link to the Walmart deal?

I remember looking in so many places for a Wii when they were in high demand. After all this searching at major retailers there were two at my local Movie/Game rental store. Too bad they went out of business, or I would have looked there again this time around...

I had a blast waiting in line for my Wii, too bad I won't be able to pick up a Wii U until around March when I got some spare cash. Its a shame, every system since I was born I bought at launch until now.

don't worry, the black ones are most definitely a fingerprint magnet, I find myself obsessively cleaning off my gamepad over and over
