So. Now, the Wii U takes its rightful place on stage, and console gaming takes a shot to the future.
I did probably buy my final next-gen console the last time around. When I play new games nowadays, it´s only PC-gaming with a 360 wireless controller.

However, I will keep my beloved Wii for casual/retro/gamecube gaming purposes. But I can´t help wondering what will happen to the Wii modding community? What do you think? Will it die a hasty death, or will we see stuff still getting updated one year from now? Is that realistic?

The latter, while homebrew devs will slow down, move there interests to other formats and what not the Wii will most likely join the likes of the Xbox and Dreamcast before it with ports of open source games and updates of various emus

For most of us here Wii will be our legacy console.
A place where you can play Super Nintento, Game Cube and Wii games.
For everyone else it will be dead and sold around the Nets or Yard Sales.

Personally, I would like to see more progress done when it comes to Gamecube and compatibility there; running all games crash-free and the ability to swap discs for example. I hope the progress will continue.

I doubt the Wii U will be hacked for quite some time (no, it doesn't count if you are running stuff in Wii mode), so I doubt that homebrew development will slow down much. The 3DS release didn't stop DS homebrew. I will continue to release updates for my homebrew.

Personally I still think there is so much potential left for Wii homebrew. Most people here have given Wii Homebrew the big ol' F.U. If third parties continue to release smaller projects on Wii, I'm sure that the Wii will last another year, maybe two at most. I don't see why Nintendo doesn't just create a "Nintendo Network" app for Wii U for account setup. Google+, Facebook and Twitter should release apps. The Wii-Mail system still has some life in it and maybe a port of the 3DS web browser would be nice. The Wii could still go strong against Ouya if the Nintendo higher ups actually followed this post. Of course, most people here think that I'm crazy for suggesting these things but it's called having vision. I can see the Wii continuing on with these things. Aside from that, right now the Wii is a dead little duckie :(

Wii homebrew won't die because it's easy to develop for and the WiiU still has a legacy mode. People need to stop being so paranoid.

The Wii sold over 90 million, the next 3-4 years we will still see new installments of Fifa and Just Dance, thats for sure!

I think it'll have an opposite effect. Think about it...

With the wiiU out & having backwards compatibility, quite some people will sell their wiis. As such, the price goes down. And with lots of information on it and no further security updates to take into considerations, it's pretty much the perfect playground for those interesting in learning how to program.

Another advantage is that a wiiu's vwii can run .elfs and .dols. In other words: lots of the skills transfer. Why "just" make a wiiu homebrew if you can release the wii homebrew as well with it? In the wii homebrew scene, we already saw quite some brew that was made for gamecube and wii alike. That modularity is probably going to increase. Projects like retroarch (which has ports on different platforms) will become more common.

Finally: I think the homebrew "community" mainly consists of individual people wanting to create something (yeah, and about 10 times that amount of people leeching off of that by lack of programming skill. But they aren't to be taken into account on this). Until it has been properly hacked (which can take a while, if the 3DS is an indication), the wii is still a perfect environment.

Christ...it's not even unthinkable we'll attract a whole swarm of people who want to create "wiiU hax", consisting of smash stack combined with their own 'hello world'-ish dol to impress their class mates.

EDIT: to those proclaiming the wii dead: neek2o just got a big update and now postloader's following. You're all entitled to your opinion, but...for the love of humanity, do NOT become an undertaker. :P

Right now the Wii is the king of homebrew, any Wii in stores up until final release will run unsigned code out of the box. The PS3 homebrew scene is alive but frustratingly slow thanks to Sony. it's focused on CFW/backup loader and only limited people with firmwares 3.6 and under were able to get in at the right time and didn't mind giving up PSN or risk banning. The Wii has a more impressive and diverse selection of homebrew apps being around much longer.

The Wii U is out and will run all current wii homebrew, which is a good thing for Wii owners. By the time the ps4/360 come out it will take a few years minimum to hack them..
I say we still have another 2-3 years at least of Wii homebrew support.. Remember this is the year we got Gamecube USB loading really advancing and awesome emulators like Retro Arch and even sega cd emulation running full speed which people thought couldn't be done.. Most other popular emulators are pretty stable and near end state, this is why the Wii is my favourite console this gen.

I can only hope Wii64/not64, WiiSX and Retro Arch continue with new releases since they have the most potential out of all emulators in the scene.. Of course USB Gamecube development still has a ways to go...
