Uh..

*Turns on Wii U*
*Connects Wiimote to Wii which is hidden away*
*Changes channel to the one that the Wii is on*
*Makes a WAD that says "Wii U menu" on it and does nothing*

This is literally just a Wii console.

Raise your hand if you're surprised?
*raises his hand*

This is the equivalent of a PS3 running PS2 homebrew or a 360 running XBox homebrew day one - it's no handheld where they have to be scarce about security, it's a disc-based home console.

Uhh... no. It's not.

The difference is the Wii U has to replicate how data would be transferred in and out of the system on the Wii, which didn't do the checks, and had no "global" functions. As we've seen the best the Wii U can do is interject some virtual NAND modification at certain steps to try to delete known files, since the inner Wii system can't do it.

He could've easily just plugged the Wii U into a bluray player and plugged that into the TV. When the switch to "Wii mode" happens, he plugs the Wii into the bluray player, and it looks like a switch has happened on the same channel, rather it's just a Wii.

I don't see at this point why you would think this has any merit to it when it'd be so easy to fake.

No security added on Wii mode.
There is security added, no other exploits work, IOS exploits are fixed and this is deleted by the System Menu on boot, meaning you have to plug the SD card in after starting the game.

It has been confirmed by numerous reputable sources, such as crediar. It could have been faked, but that would be stupid seeing as it does actually work.

The resolution never switches from 1080p to the Wii's native resolution, whichever one you might pick. That, and he clearly syncs up the WiiMote with the WiiU and never lets go of it, not to mention the WiiU-specific channels clearly visible on the screen.

The resolution wouldn't switch if you were running it through a bluray player. He shows it syncing up to the Wii U but that could easily be a friend off screen syncing another wiimote to the Wii U at the same time and he's just syncing his to the Wii. The wiimote on the Wii U screen barely moves. All his friend would have to do is point.

You've got me with the titles though (Wii U isn't out over here yet so I don't know what it looks like). Hypothetically he could've got those WADs with NUSD and installed them onto his Wii. He'd only have to install the banners for them, as he never actually accessed them.

Admittedly, by this point it would be getting pretty elaborate. Perhaps it is real. I'd just be surprised if they didn't patch such a glaring bug.

Edit: Just read the comment about Crediar. That's pretty crazy.

Are you sure? What about Indiana Pwns etc.? Only Smash Stack works?
Actually, looking again at WiiUBrew, I see the other game based exploits other than Twilight Hack are marked as "untested". But I am fairly confident they won't work. They have the System Menu delete Smash Stack every boot, which implies renewed exploit prevention measures in the System Menu. Seeing as the save based exploits must all be copied through the System Menu, I think it's safe to assume they will be blocked.

The deletion appears to be pretty random - does it occur in the Wii Menu itself, before booting the game? Leaving it in the already hacked Wii Mode leaves the modified IOS which takes care of the SD scanning vulnerable and entirely removable, I would assume that this kind of protection should be on the WiiU side of things which should check for Wii System Menu integrity upon switching modes.

Fun news, but all it really means is we can do some of the stuff we did on our Wiis on our WiiUs. Maybe it'll become more than that in the future, but for now, there's not much to be excited about.

I'd say the WiiU side would check the WiiMode integrity before loading it, but I hazard a guess that it is the WiiMode SM that deletes the Smash Stack file. I haven't got a WiiU though (nor do I intend to get one in the foreseeable future), so I can't test myself and haven't seen any detailed analysis from someone trustworthy who has.
