"The world around you is not what it seems."

That's the catchphrase of a new game that mysteriously surfaced this weekend. It's Google's first foray into MMOs, and it boasts the biggest map ever used in a game: the whole world. Yep, you read that right--the entire planet earth is the world map for this game.

The game is currently in closed beta, but you may sign up for an invitation to try it out.

I've never been into MMO games, but this one has piqued my interest.

"
This app is incompatible with your Optus HTC HTC Incredible S."

It's just the country though. If it comes down to it and I actually get accepted into the closed beta then I'll just get the apk.

it's using Augmented Reality? That's a thing which always interested me. But I don't have phone/tablet.
Can you fake the GPS position ? (let's hack the game to visit deserted island with treasure where nobody will go in real life! lol)

I don't know if you will find a lot of players, I hope there are a lot of NPC/enemies or else it will be boring.

This reminds me of Backyard Monsters and the like, where the goal is to conquer and control chunks of the map, except you do this by going to real-world locations and uploading your GPS location. Good luck camping specific sites.

2 things I notice about this:

1- MMO use to be shitty, and the fact that google is the dev do no change it, but ok, we cant judge it without even look at it.
2- If they will release it for iOS, where is the "war" against apple that everybody is talking about? War between dumb customers do not mean war between companies.

Because half the people who have smartphones use iOS. Porting the game to iOS doubles your potential userbase.

Why the fuck would you limit your mmo to the tiny minority of people that have smartphones?
A PC release has a hundred times the potential amount of customers.

Because the majority of gamers own desktops. It's a bit hard to cater a game that relies on moving to certain areas in the world whilst carrying your desktop around with some sort of portable power supply.
