Just lost about 1.3 TBs of data!

My external fell on the floor, wouldn't recognize any longer. I dismantled it and it at least works still (which is a major relief) but I had to format, I lost everything! That includes tons of movies, all my music, tons of Wii stuff. I guess its all obtainable again but now that I moved I'm on DSL so it will take FOREVER!

I guess this is just a first world problem but I figured I'd share. At least I played Black Ops 2 early hehehe! (don't pirate flame me, i know).

ugh, This happened to me as well, took a week to regain all my data after a prior week of grief with various "data recovery" tools.. Good luck dude, and learn from your mistakes. Next HDD I bought was a toughdrive that has yet to fail me.

well its internal now so it shouldn't happen again, its WD, i trust their brand. my cat was hiding behind the pc, it was time for a bath (we are combating fleas) and he wouldn't come out so i had to rip him out and sure enough, router and hdd fell.

i've learned my lesson, hdds will now go on bottom of pc desk or internal only from now on. i'll recover from the loss, the only part that will be difficult is the music, i had so much stuff, i can't even remember it all.

anyone think data recovery is possible? it was showing unallocated so i formatted the drive back to NTFS.

on a side note: i think Obama will be president again! Hooray! Romney is a bigot and a fascist. His stance on everything is so controversial.

You can try Getdataback for NTFS or something similar.
But I'd advise you to get a second 2 TB drive to copy everything over.

You can still use data recovery software, just be advised the folders on the root drive are going to not look recognizable

If this was a disk full of pirated content, it's unlikely that he'll recover complete, working files. Data Recovery is all fine and dandy, but now when we're talking about DVD-size strings of data to recover.

In any case, I am willing to bet that you didn't actually use all that 1,3TB of stuff on a daily basis, you were probably just hoarding it.

Something went wrong and it dissapeared from the original folder and didn't apear in the destination folder...

Luckely I didn't overwrite anything and I got everything back with a program. (I'll look if I can find the name, it was something with EAH (like asus gpu's ......))

If you did a "real" format, I feel sorry for (at least about the music), as it can be impossible to recover it (some programs can actualy recover it, but it will be expensive (that's why governments etc. officialy have to run stuff like Boot and Nuke to overwrite it multiple times to make shure it's unrecoverable))

quick format only cleans the index, so a program could find the files back again.

Officially they might have to do that, but FYI once data has been overwritten once there's no way to recover it except with alien tech or magic (although maybe except for when you are using a weird type of memory). Wiping a drive once is enough, more is just pointless. Besides if you're THAT paranoid might as well burn the drive and throw it in a grinder.

Why, though? Wiping once is sufficient to destroy any data on it xD

Well, the pc's were quite old.
And a couple wouldn't boot anymore.

They were already loaded in the van, when I came with the Idea (people can still fish those things out the trash pile (paranoid parrot mode)) and I was a bit too lazy to boot them up again.

So I just broke the darned things

As said, if you just quick-formatted it (overwriting the header and FAT, usually takes a few seconds) then it's likely you'll be able to get a good chunk of data back.

Commandline-type of utility, but (actually) free and very powerful.

However if you did a full format (the minutes+ long process) then data's been overwritten.
