I think the coins are the dormant form of the youkais.I like the idea of Youkai in general.
The games feels like it's a mix between Yuujinchou and Mushishi.
It could be a pokemon-like though, you are using your youkai to fight, but maybe not (it could be like Ni no Kuni, where you fight with them).
