C'mon, Rydian - this game has been in development for quite some time now. Even if the engine looks "fine for a pre-alpha", it falls short of expectations, not to mention that the art design so far, the very thing this trailer was supposed to show, as I previously stated, looks boring and poopie. I won't get into the "Notch" discussion since I think he's a bit of a narcissistic douche, but what I'm going to say is that so far, I'm not really interested in the game outside of the "16-bit computer you can program for!" factor.
The majority of the development on the game previously was the CPU (he literally developed a virtual CPU) and the engine. He's not using a pre-made engine, I remember reading about the physics issues he was having with movement a while back.

You can feel free to go develop your own virtual CPU and 3D game engine and then come back and tell me how quickly it went...

Eh this could have a lot of potential if they execute it well. Minecraft in space could be a lot of fun, if you can build you own ship and find upgrades for it, fight space battles and explore different systems and planets. That video really doesn't show a thing so I don't think it's fair to pass judgement on the game based on that alone.

I feel the "It's indie, cut it some slack!" argument flowing from this comment, but I just refuse to admit that Mojang is an indie studio at this point. Don't get me wrong - it has the potential to look alright - it looks poopie now. "If you don't like it, make a better one" argument doesn't really fly when you consider the fact that Mojang is an actual studio now with a sizable budget.

Say hello to Penumbra's Tech Demo. Before it was developed as a full-sized game, it was a school project. Can you see what I mean?

Nnno.

I was commenting on the fact that it's one guy. That's why I challenged you, a single person, to replicate it.
"But there's money!" - Money means development when it's used to pay people to work alongside of or instead of you. As far as I've read, this is all his doing so far.

You all are just spoiled by the way big studios present things. How many trailers and sneak peaks actually represent the game as it is at that point of development? Jack shit. They all doctor images (PSP game development screenshots at double the PSP's resolution and with AA on is not an indicator of what the game actually looks like them), and in some cases they'll specifically create content just for trailers that doesn't actually exist in the game, they rushed to put something together so they'd actually have content for a trailer (Duke Nukem Forever was famous for this, where the majority of what was shown in the trailer didn't exist in-game). And even in those cases, games are rarely shown off this early. Hell, playable demos of old cart games people fins are usually much further on in development than this. You all are so used to faked up glitter and post-processing in trailers that when you actually see a game as it is in development, it's jarring because you're not used to seeing barebones shit (and I repeat, I don't think there's anything interesting to this game so far).

I was convinced that this game is not Notch's personal project - as far as I know, the whole of Mojang is working on it. Trust me - I'm not spoiled by trailers. I know how game development looks like and I know that screenshots are often doctored. My point was that provided the entire studio with a sizable budget behind it is working on the project, there's no good explaination as to why the game would look like it's circa 1999 at best.

If it's Notch's personal project - fair play, things might go a bit slow. If not, Penumbra showed that a bunch of school kids can create an amazing graphics engine with great shading (for 2005 standards) and a physics engine easily rivaling the likes of Havoc.

Now, I'm not going to say that the end product will look poopie because the pre-alpha footage does - what I'm saying is that the current state of the game is nothing spectacular and that the interiors are uninspired. The ship looks like a warehouse suspended in space - it lacks the grandeur of a "mothership" and at the same time, it doesn't give you the claustrophobic feeling of being on a small ship - it's something in-between, and in this case, it doesn't do the game any favours.

Perhaps now my stance is more clear - no need to get your panties in a bunch. :P

As far as I know the rest of Mojang is working on Minecraft (they have like an entire 4 people or something on it, that's a record) or Scrolls.

Minecraft was officially released. Why does it need to be worked on?

Also, if they can't get more developers, they need to learn how to prioritize... although Scrolls doesn't look good either.

Fair play then, that's not a whole lot of developers.

Let's give it time, we'll see what comes out of it. I just hope that Notch's eccentric "autoeur" approach won't spoil this project rather than improve it.

Idunno' about you, but official free DLC (of sorts, integrated into the main program) is A-okay in my book.

They got more developers as they wanted. Jeb joined, Notch left, they grabbed Dinnerbone from Bukkit, they commission C418 or whatever when audio is needed, etc. Too many cooks spil the soup, tossing more monkeys at a problem isn't necessarily going to fix it faster, etc.

I just hope that Notch's eccentric "autoeur" approach won't spoil this project rather than improve it.
The thing started out with a virtual 16-bit CPU, I don't have any hopes of this appealing to the masses.

I see that you have little faith in humanity. :P

From what I've heard, you're not supposed to be "forced" into programming anything elaborate - you might as well skip that part of the game and enjoy the space sim. The compiler is like a mini-game, you could use it to create something fancy, but you might just as well use it only for the absolute necessities using code snippets. I'm personally eager to play another space sim after FTL - I used to love this genre, but it's suffering from a drought, so what can you do? I'd love to play this one if anything *good* comes out of it.

That looks like a 8 year's first attempt at drawing 3d
