majority of places are on holiday from 29th September till October 6th
so if you are emailing a team about updates don't expect replies

I bought an R4i 3DS-SDHC the other day and waited patiently for the firmware to update. Once it finally did, I formatted my microSD card and moved the update onto it as instructed.
However, every time I try to put it in my 3DS I get a black screen that says "an error has occured"
My 3DS is updated to 4.4.0-10u. Would anyone know why it's not working?

It's not working, becuase you have to first update the flashcart, by running the update you downloaded, then you update the firmware of you're 3ds.

Since you have done the oposite of that, you have no choice but to find a DS / DSi, on which you can run you're flashcart and update it, using the guide posted on the R4i 3DS-SDHC website.

because coping files to teh SD card does not update the Firmware on a Flashcard

you have to do the following before you update the console but after you have copied the update for that certain card

No you did not wait patiently as you were told to.
You rushed ahead into the trap - knowing it but still chosing to blindly ignore it.

The card does not work on 4.4.x and thus can not be updated on it.
You have to find someone else to do it (with a different card or DS) or pay the Idiots Tax and buy a new one.

I bought the 3DS from a friend and it was already updated to 4.4.0-10.
Damn. oh well. I'll try and find someone with an out of date ds, I suppose.
