You'll be able to save data across both versions. To do this, you'll have to download a free app from the 3DS eShop, which you'll use to transfer data from the Wii U to the 3DS and vice versa over wi-fi. With this function, you'll be able to continue your Monster Hunter game on the move.

A Wii U console and up to three Nintendo 3DS consoles can communicate for four-player local co-op play over wi-fi. Using this, in combination with the data transfer between consoles, means you'll be able to invite your friends over for what Capcom hopes will be Monster Hunter parties, them bringing their data files on their 3DS to communicate with a Wii U, and all four players playing in the same game.

I have no monster hunter friends capcom, y u not put online on 3DS!!!

"We didn't have the correct techniques to get it to work.

But monster hunter 4....

It's pretty cool to see 3DS do crossplay with a HD console.

It's bullshit is what it is, but I guess it can't be helped. Depends on how many friends get it I might grab it, but we're happy enough with patched psp version.

If you lose the game or system that was holding your Monster Hunter 3 save (Wii U or 3DS), does that mean the save is permanently lost to the other system too?

It looks promising. Even now I think this means that I won't be playing with any 3DS players unless they're somehow in my house and connected to my wifi locally... Looks like I won't have any trouble there. Hopefully I will still be able to use my $5 cheapo keyboard I bought that worked with MH3 to type. I'll have to look up all the differences between tri and ultimate.

Seeing how Nintendo (in conjunction with Capcom here) and Sony are both pushing crossplay, it looks like purchasing the same game twice is the way of the future.

I don't see this as a major issue at the moment. If you love a game so much that you can't choose between having a big screen version or a portable one, buy it twice.

It's when games come out that have additional content that's only available if you have both versions (and that will happen!) that things start getting unreasonable.

I think saves are just synchronized. But it would be in your favor to transfer a save back from WiiU to 3DS before you resume playing there.

Not everyone can afford to buy "both" you know, and just a heads up for anyone who is buying this on the console, on the wii the save file was locked to the system you can't copy it to a sd card, i would presume capcom will do the same on the wii u version.

On top of that no, i love a game but that dosn't mean i would buy it twice and waste money, just example, metal gear solid hd collection, i brought it but why would i buy metal gear solid 3 3d on the 3ds when the hd collection costs excatly the same price as the 3ds game and contains all 3 games in one? Compare to mgs 3 3d?

Well MGS3D vs. the HD Collection is an entirely different issue and if we go into that we'll be taking a trip downhill.

But we could hope that, especially with the 3DS doing digital distribution now, they could take a page out of the Sony handbook and give Wii U buyers the 3DS version for free. Fuck yeah Sony.

That would be awesome and give a lot of people espcially in europe the incentive to buy the wii u version and get everything they need, but that would never happen espcially when they charge £40 for a digital download 3ds game, nintendo won't miss out on that oppertunity, in that sense sony are better at being more generous when it comes to giving content.

Well it's Capcom's decision this time.

...Which doesn't make the chances much better. Actually it just makes them worse.
