Not really. The word 'are' is usually used for plurals, while 'is' would be used for singular words.
For example, 'there are grammar mistakes' would be correct, but 'there is grammar mistakes' would be incorrect. A correct version would be 'there is a grammar mistake'. Grammar is a singular noun, so it was correct before.
