So Borderlands 2 got a lot of hype. If my Steam friends list has told me anything, it got a lot of sales too. And if this article told me anything more, it's that it got a fuckload of sales.

The first major landmark of Borderlands 2 was outselling its original. By a lot. Four-to-one to be exact. So imagine for every copy of Borderlands you bought, you got a four-pack of Borderlands 2 instead.

Second was beating out 2012's other big launches. Admittedly the winter season hasn't hit yet which usually holds our big launches (this year includes the Wii U and the annual sales-spanker Call of Duty) but it beat out the former champion, Mass Effect 3, by 4,000 copies.

The game also sold a large majority on the Xbox 360, with the total percentage of retail copies totaling 71% on Xbox 360. The Playstation 3 only managed to grab 22%, and the PC grabbed 7%. However, this only accounts for physical retail sales, and as we should all know by now, digital accounts largely for PC sales now.

Borderlands 2 had a peak of 123k or so people today so far on Steam.
So PC sales are probably doing quuuuite well.

Good stuff. Really glad to see Gearbox bathing is such success.

The success surprises me, but considering how well recieved borderlands 1 was...it's not THAT surprising.

I hope that this will encourage more companies to give new IPs a shot. Some may fail, but unless you take the chance, you'll never hit the jackpot.

...More likely we're going to see a tidal wave of Borderlands rip offs very soon.

This seems like it would take a bit more effort to clone than most games.

Never really got into the first game, haven't checked the second game out. I don't think I'll never play it, I've heard it's playable with Tunngle even, so it should be pretty easy to pirate and play it with some friend.

As copying/cloning seems to be a way of life for what has been dubbed the triple a market I can safely say I would rather see a sea of borderlands imitators than a sea of COD/battlefield imitators.

As for the matter at hand I have not got around to playing it yet but if it is as much of an improvement on the first as people are saying/the DLC to the first would appear to demonstrate the potential of then I am sure my response would be "too right".

I still think ME3 is a much better game though [/N7 elitist]

But great to see GearBox getting some of the money back that it wasted on Duke Nukem Forever.

You can't even compare the two games. The only thing they have in common is you shoot guns. Seriously. I mean that's like saying you prefer to eat Pizza than to drink Orange Soda.

Which I do not because I prefer to be quenched instead of stuffed.

But hey, I'm not really comparing them, I'm just saying that "hey, I prefer to play this type of shooter, than this one". No different than me saying that I prefer Ridge Racer over Gran Turismo. Both have you drive cars, but one is an arcade style, while the other is simulation. For ME3 and BL2, it's story driven RPG against... iono, FPS RPG?

So of your five nominees there are two games are not out yet (nor are they leaked to any substantial degree than I can see) and one game was a mid 2011 title?

Well it works for me.

Yes, there are no other big hit/good game enough to get a nomination (IMO)
Xenoblade was released on April 2012 on US
What other games can you name?

I agree the post borderlands 2 year looks pretty drab and the one before it had some fairly slim pickings as well. Still ignoring what I will say in a couple of paragraphs time
Final Fantasy XIII-2 appeared this year, Soulcalibur V hit, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, we saw a new SSX title, another ignoring what I am about to say but did we not see Tales of Graces f, Yakuza: Dead Souls, the XBLA Walking Dead titles have seen some acclaim (there were several other XBLA and PSN titles that could probably also warrant something being said), Risen 2: Dark Waters, Dragon's Dogma, Spec Ops: The Line, we saw a new Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Dead or Alive 5 has already leaked but that brings me up to the present. I have not played some of those (or indeed the two 2012 games already released in your list) but I reckon a case could be made for most of those.

Xenoblade a 2012 US release.... for some reason I am reminded of the time one of the GTA games won GOTY awards for several years on the trot in some of the filmed and televised entertainment evenings. I was aware of it but my main issue for that is it could also mean that if various games get released for a different system (were are presently staring down the barrel of steam for linux after all) and beyond that it was not like it was a just missed out being in 2011 release as well by say missing the Christmas window.

I could probably get a bit more flamebaity as well but I reckon that has a place in a different thread if it has one at all.

You said Risen 2 twice ;)

Personally though I'd put Dragon's Dogma, Mass Effect 3, and Spec Ops on my GOTY list. Really liked the first Walking Dead episode but I haven't had the time to complete the second or buy the third. I enjoyed KoA a bit but it's still a heavily repetitious game. 20 hours in and I feel like I'm actually 50 hours in. I only dabbled in SCV a bit but I didn't like it as much as IV. Mechanically I'm told it's a lot better but the characters were just boring and it lacked a lot of the expected trimmings of a Soul Calibur game, like actual content. The rest I haven't played and/or are not interested in.

Xenoblade has been called several times "Best RPG of this Gen" so it deserve a spot.

I totally forgot about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning & Dragon's Dogma which were really awesome too but IDK if they'll make it.

The point is that this year has not so many big hit games comig or already released compared to other years like on 2011.

Yeah I was pushing that list a bit harder than I might and I have not played several titles (indeed I have not really played any new console or mainstream games since SSX save perhaps a quick run around in Ninja Gaiden 3), I will say though "has been called several times "Best RPG of this Gen"" seems remarkably close to the "it got good reviews so it must" line of logic we see trotted out when something might get a bad review (see some of the stuff for Nintendo first/second party titles when a reviewer might dare to say it was less than perfect).

You say 2011.. I normally shy away from wikipedia but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_in_video_gaming seems pretty accurate and it does not paint quite such a pretty picture, I will probably remember Deus Ex in years to come, several other titles were notable and it was certainly not a bad year.

I guess it is just a case of too many sequels and years do not seem to be a great way to measure a span of time (and if we must I am quite happy to switch to August to August schedule) for something like this.

Can't wait for my new PC so I can play this. Looks and sounds amazing, good to know its going well :3

Also, offtopic but, am I the only person remotely interested in Dishonored, and has played Sleeping Dogs(Though admittedly this one is quite similar to various open world games)?

Dishonored is/was usually on my "other than borderlands 2 there is possibly" list. I will however be comparing it to my rosier memories of the thief series (possibly even setting in my head as a spiritual sequel) and I fear something of what happened to Deus Ex last year in "awesome game but suffers for not being quite as expansive* as what an an older game" which is not good when compared to thief 2 and possibly even 3.

*I am using expansive here in a similar fashion to resolution vs magnification in microscopy which is to say blow it up all you want but you will gain no new information for it or back in games analogies remember Shenmue 1's main town, remember Just Cause 2's island?. There might be an element of "too big" in Just Cause 2's case but [insert sentence with the word charm in].

Sleeping dogs I missed by virtue of not playing much of anything new since March but seen as I did enjoy true crime 1 it is definitely on my list.

Anyway back on borderlands 2 I suppose I should say the flash game "demake" was pretty good.

This doesn't surprise me, everyone and their grandmother is playing it around here, and I'm okay with that :) This has been a better year for gaming for me then last couple of years.
