"There's no price drop formally, but the thing that's been happening in the market over the last year or so is that there's been so many retail price promotions, and so many different gift card offers and all those things, being done by all of us (Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony), that we've heard from our consumer, 'Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value,'"

Instead, Sony will offer four different PS3 models to consumers: the old 160 GB version for $250, a Super Slim 250 GB model for $270, and, crazy as it sounds, a 320 GB old model and a new 500 GB Super Slim model priced identically at $300.

What the fuck.

Sony needs to fire their marketing team.

Well with cards and shit, I can understand. But if they mean like they're passing on bundles and stuff, then eh. I mean, the cards and promotions they give out are pretty much shit anyways.

Or it could just be because it doesn't need a price drop? $250 is fine for the memory and such you're getting, bundles are even a better deal.

That's a really stupid thing to say. Customers don't want price-cuts?

And the introduction of a new model should at least result in the old 160GB model lowering in price. It's common-fucking sense. They also kept an old 320GB model and a new 500GB model at the same damn price, that's pure foolishness.

It's not like the price won't drop when they come out with their next gen console. It was either do it now or then; they're not going to drop the price twice.

...I don't see why Sony would even have to explain why they didn't drop the price - it's their choice whether their hardware requires one or not, and they figured that it doesn't. A redesign of the system takes manpower and R&D time - all this costs, and those costs have to be "made up" by selling units. They can't afford to sell at a loss, especially not now when they just released a redesigned system and they're actively working on a new one.

Older cheaper to produce models don't get a price-cut with the introduction of better models at the same price. Am I the only one who sees the problem here?

It would appear so. Who told you that the older (Slim) model is cheaper to produce? Super Slim was developed specifically to lower production costs, I do believe that the older model actually costs more to manufacture.

Well, I'm not going to speak for anyone but myself, but I don't see a problem with Sony setting a price to whatever they want to set it to.

I do see your point, but who with any dose of common sense will buy old Slim (320GB) when they can buy Super Slim with 500GB of storage. Apart from that SS is ugly as hell, that's not worthy a loss of 180GB

I don't think it's ugly, I quite like the top-loading mechanism, but that's besides the point. Not everyone will stand in line to become an early adopter, which is why Sony has to entice future buyers to get the Super Slim in favour of the Slim, which undoubtly costs more to manufacture.

They're enticing them with storage capacity. I don't see a problem - I see economics 101.

I could have got a PS3 120GB in Dec 2010 for $200 at an unadvertised sale at Walmart, but I instead bought a red Wii for $125.

Keep an eye out at Walmart for sales this holiday shopping season.

You've just said the same thing that I did. And I don't like thos ridges on top of the SS, but that's a matter of a person's view. It's just illogical for Sony to do a price cut on the Slim Model.

I would imagine the ridges were to obscure any fingerprints that would inevitably been sucked onto it.

Still, for me, they look unappealing. And somehow, even though I had to close my PS2 Slim drive like a toploader, the lid didn't have much fingerprints on it. I think it's a matter of plastic manufacturer uses.

If the new model is cheaper to produce, why isn't it cheaper than the existing models rather than being priced more, @[member='Foxi4']? Sony's reasoning is that consumers don't want price-cuts which is a really dumb thing to say.

Practically it is, which is why you get a bigger hard drive to cover the price difference. It costs Sony less to put it in than it would cost the consumer to swap all by themselves - a typical win-win. They have a silly way of explaining their strategy and it does sound stupid, fair play, but at the end of the day Sony merely wants to sell more Super Slims and a moderate amount of Slims, purely because the new model costs them less to manufacture.
