Filetrip.net is our well known sister site, a huge download center with thousands of files for all systems. But since this year, Filetrip also lets you to host any file you want to upload, with an awesome 100 GB free private upload space!

We have just finished implementing some interesting changes and we thought we'd let you know:

  • It is now possible to embed and share your files such as your videos, audio files as well as all types of documents.
  • You can now upload files directly from the Filetrip home page in the quick upload box
  • Anonymous users can now upload files (without registering an account) although it is recommended to create an account if you want to be able to edit settings and manage your files later
  • Lots of bug fixes: video background is now black as it should be, image previews have been fixed, and lots of other little improvements
  • Is there something you'd like us to improve or add to the site? Feel free to leave us your comments in this thread!

On a side note: due to the steady drop of ad revenue over the past months, and the lack of sponsors for quite some time, we have implemented a new revenue source on Filetrip. When a visitor downloads a file from one of the categories of the public download center (does not apply to private uploads), they will sometimes be presented with an installer. The installer speeds up the download and mirrors the file on Amazon's CDN for faster future downloads and to save us bandwidth costs, the counterpart being that it offers to install an IE toolbar onto your computer. Needless to say if you don't want that, just uncheck the box and the toolbar won't be installed. Registered users can download files without the installer, and non-Windows users won't see it no matter what. Hopefully this will allow us to stabilize our financial balance and allow us to offer more and more awesome gifts for competitions!

Two days ago, I uploaded an application I wrote from scratch over 3 weeks. I chose FileTrip because I feel like it's an extension of the GBATemp community. This morning, I got an email saying that my application had been reported as spam and removed, thanks to your new revenue stream.

If you ask me, you need to rethink this. At least make it clearer to your users that they're not actually downloading the software they asked for right away.

to everyone complaining about the installer: it is actually from Filetrip, not from the Wood authors.
and yes, it offers to install a toolbar when you download it. I know, most people hate toolbars.

Hmm...okay, I just want you to consider something though.
Look at the download count for Wood R4 1.51, it's more than 12,000 downloads.
I get the uncomfortable feeling Wood R4 1.52 may not see more than a thousand downloads due to this change. Do you have any idea how uncomfortable it makes people to see they're downloading a suspicious EXE file instead of described file they expected?

I seriously expect your download count on Filetrip to plummet as a result of this.
I tried running it and this is some of the most obnoxious, user deterring shit I have ever seen.
I unchecked the boxes, click next. It then gives a popup trying to convince me to install this toolbar shit, and words it as though I will not get my download otherwise.
I click cancel, it goes to the next page. There are MORE checkboxes for downloads and browser alterations, I uncheck these and click next, it gives another popup to try and convince me about this crap which I cancel.
Then it finally downloads the file straight to my desktop without a prompt, and I quit the application.

It's just...ugh, having to download a separate program for each individual FileTrip download like this, do not want.

Out of curiosity I performed md5 hash checks on the Wood R4 1.52 files downloaded directly from my web browser or through the executable.
They both returned the exact same hash so it appears that the executable does not alter the downloads in any way, which is good.

I suspect the site isn't doing very well because......well we are on a verge of a new generation home console, the 3DS isn't fully hacked, not even the DSi is fully hacked !
In the good old days we used to come here and there was a lot going on.....plenty of fresh homebrew, new exploits, new firmwares, awesome new flashcarts pushing the limits of our imaginations when it came to new features...
And new games, hope for the future and so on.
Now the homebrew scene is asleep, waiting for new hacks to open up new possibilities, Wii releases are non existent, DS is long dead, and 3DS dumps aren't even listed.
Let's face it, there's not a lot to talk about on these forums lately, as a lot of people moved to other platforms in the past few years.

Hopefully things will pick up with the Wii U release, and maybe the 3DS will be proved to be a liable platform for emulators and homebrew one day.

Until then, if I were to invest money on this site, I wouldn't see it worthwhile either, so I understand the situation.
We just have to hang in there and do what we can to keep this community alive.
So I welcome anything that will keep us on the web these days.

Time to change my user-agent.

There's a rather under-stated alternative download link on the page.

That's kinda a complaint of the download window actually. The alternative 'click here' isn't bolded.
But more than that you've got all this wasted space, where you could have two clear buttons, regular download or direct download.

Make your options clear and easy to understand and use. If you're going to make the download link to the .EXE automated, at least make it visible you have direct downloads.

When signed into FileTrip, I still get auto download of the installer thing. I can manually download the real file, but I still have to delete the installer nonsense afterwards. After a few failed attempts (changing user agent, trying to write a user script to block auto download), I finally managed to stop the auto download by adding an exception to Chrome preventing filetrip from running javascript. I still have to manually start the download after clicking the download button, but at least it doesn't auto download some rubbish instead of what I actually want.

I understand that this idea will help us, but I'm not one for asking users to install anything. there should be an option to download with the downloader (if you wish) and another to just get the file. I'm an admin and the site is constantly asking me to run an .exe that nod32 is throwing a shield at. =P

This morning, I got an email saying that my application had been reported as spam and removed, thanks to your new revenue stream.

your file was moderated before the staff was made aware of the update. it was not deleted, only disabled while we investigated. as you can see, your file was restored yesterday.

OK I am taking your requests into consideration.

@[member='RupeeClock']
you make it sound like there is no option to download the file without the installer, while it's actually there (and bolded now)

as for the other suggestions:
- I will make an option for registered users so that the downloader doesn't come up by default (you'll get the regular file by default)
- the link to download the file manually is bold now as some requested
- the download box now clearly states that the download goes through the "filetrip sponsored downloader" by default and the link to download the file manually is well visible.

" I got an email saying that my application had been reported as spam and removed"
who did the email come from, and who removed it? are you sure it is related to this?

any other suggestion please post here :)

@AlanJohn
maybe one day... still got a lot of other things to improve first though :)
