Looks great.

One thing I noticed in the trailer was how part of Mario's hat lights up a bit when near the flame which is a neat touch (since that didn't happen in NSMB Wii).

And does anyone remember Electroplankton?

I just can't get too excited for New Super Mario Bros U. It's just too similar to the NDS / Wii / 3DS games.

Check out this old commercial for Super Mario World (Keep in mind the leap from NES to SNES):

THIS is what I want from a new 2D Mario game! I want a different aesthetic, amazing music, and grander level design. Is anybody else just a little disappointed?

Hmm... looks really good as per usual! Then again so did NSMB2, until I started playing it...... (it's merely a 'good' game)
Half of me agrees with the above post , and bemoans the fact this looks sorta same-old-same-old... but the other half realises that I'm getting on a bit, and whilst the joys of Mario 3 & World I'll never forget about, these games suit this generation: my 2 youngish lads love all the NSMB games, whilst Mario 3/World are little more than a curiosity for them. Now I can either piss and moan about how Mario 'aint what he used to be'. or I can look forward to another competent, fun platformer that should be a real blast with the kids this chrimbo. ....Ssssoooo, bring on NSMBU for me! ;)

Comparing Super Mario World to New Super Mario Bros. U and claiming the former looks better just doesn't make sense.

They're just blinded by nostalgia. And New Super Mario Bros. U does have different music.

As for grander level design:

Did anyone notice during the preview on the 13th, when Bill was demonstrating NSMBU : Mario in the squirrel suit was able to dive and then swoop back up just like a certain cape in SMW? i really hope this is what i saw, because all ive seen so far was gliding like in MK7 and it would be awesome to see the return of SMW flying mechanics [timed dives/swoops]

Game informer stated that if you shake the gamepad while using the flying squirrel suit, a gust of wind will help push you up and allow you to glide for awhile. Of course, you are also able to perform tricks similar to the super cape from SMW.

Holy fucking shit, a game released today has significantly better graphics than a 22 year old game.

Stop the presses!

He was comparing the transition from SMB3:

To the transition from New Super Mario Bros:

to NSMBU:

The gif you posted showed (other than the really obvious features of Mario like the ground, blocks, coins and Mario himself):
Blocks that widen themselves. Featured in Super Mario World.
Fuzzies. Featured in Super Mario World.
Big coins. Featured in Super Mario World (as yoshi coins).
Blocks that appear when you tap the Wii U pad controller. Fucking wow. What an innovative new feature that adds new difficulty to the game, and totally isn't just a tool for parents to help their inexperienced children complete it.

And the picture you selected shows the mountains in the background, a warp pipe, bad guys, clouds, Mario and the floor. The only thing it had that the Super Mario World screenshot didn't have was a tree in the background, otherwise it was just like a HD version of a 22 year old game.

Super Mario World added tonnes of new additions like yoshis, flying (adding loads of vertical bits), new enemies, new blocks that significantly changed gameplay, completely overhauled the graphics (both foreground and background), moved the HUD over the main game and stopped the "lottery" system in favour of the system used in every single Mario game since, made a much better world map, tweaked up the physics etc.

NSMBU changed the numbers to look more tacky like the N64 era, swapped the coins and big coins round on the HUD, changed the little icons, made them opaque instead of translucent so now they interfere with gameplay more, continue to use prerendered models that now just look shiny, made full backgrounds and made the textures HD. They made a couple of things to make the game easier for young children and made it HD, and added a couple of extra features that don't massively influence how the levels are designed etc.

Obviously that deduction is purely from trailers, so I can't really argue how much the gameplay will be changed, but from footage it looks like "more of the same" rather than a revolution.

The point of NSMB isn't to innovate. The entire point of NSMB was to bring back 2D platforming, with improved graphics.

In an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, The interviewer asked;

"The first four core Mario Titles (SMB 1,2,3 and World) were distinctly different games. You could look at any screenshot and instantly identify which game it is. With the New series, they all feature a similar art style and similar music. Why did you choose to make them so similar as opposed to the approach of the earlier games?"

To which Tezuka responded;

"I think once we decided what the entire world was going to feel like, we wanted a more well defined, more vibrant version each time. Just doing that graphical change is really not something that is going to bring a freshness to the feel of each title."

Miyamoto: "Mr. Tezuka is overseeing all of the development of the NSMB series, and I am handling the development of the 3D Mario games. Perhaps as you have seen with Super Mario 3D land, even with the 3D Mario games we are starting to see some games that are a bit of a blend between the 2D and the 3D style. But really, the NSMB series exists as the extension of the original 2D Mario series. So it is really staying true to the roots of the side-scrolling Mario series."

Reading comprehension, use it. I was referring to those that say Super Mario World or the older Mario games had more soul or life than NSMBU.

The gif I posted was supposed to show the level design in the game, not new additions. If you're asking for new additions, Baby Yoshi's are an example.

The differences between the pictures I posted are not miniscule. Everything is re-done in models, the background look much nicer, the environments are more vibrant as well as other things.

You say that the models are the same and just look shiny but that isn't true. The new model is a more accurate representation of the character art.

Compared to New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the graphics are quite different. We have animated overhauled backgrounds, re-done models, new environment textures, lighting effects and more. If you think they just made it HD, then I think you need to see an eye doctor.

That isn't even the best example of the visual differences.

Ghost_Painting_MarioWiiU.png

There isn't a single level in New Super Mario Bros. Wii that resembles this. With backgrounds that resemble Starry Night, better looking models, nicer lighting effects and even how the pipes look different to fit in with the level.

The tapping to make platforms is the asymmetric multiplayer feature. Not some way to make it easier for children (but I suppose it could also work that way).

Oh and that Super Mario World style-map you like so much, it's back.

Yeah, and NSMBU does the exact same thing.

Your blind nostalgia is hilarious.

I waited for the NSMB series to take after SMW too, but you seem to be one of those twits who think that "SUPER MARIO WORLD IS TEH BEST AND CANNOT BE BEATEN!!!!11!!!"

By the way, @[member='Alexrose'], the only reason why SMW looks so different from SMB3 is because of TECHNOLOGY, not artistic choice.
