Nokia is an old-timer in the cellphone business. After getting bored of producing cellphones more durable than adamantium, they've turned their attention to these newfangled smart phones ("What's up with that? They aren't smart, and they're barely phones!" piped in Jerry Seinfeld).

Just today, they've announced a brand new phone: The Nokia Lume 920. And the specs are... well, take a look.

As one of the first Windows Phone 8 devices to be officially announced, this device augments Espoo's line with a larger, curved 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU, 2,000mAh battery, NFC, integrated wireless charging and an 8-megapixel rear PureView camera capable of 1080p video. The display packs WXGA (1,280 x 768) resolution, is 25 percent brighter than the next best panel on the market and it's the fastest LCD that Nokia has ever shipped on a smartphone. What's more, the screen also boasts what Nokia calls "Super Sensitive Touch," which promises to let you use it even when wearing gloves or mitts.

The timing of this announcement comes right before the anticipated announcement of Apple's iPhone successor; it seems pretty likely that Nokia is hoping to deflate some of that hype. Nokia's new smartphone is expected to ship sometime before the end of the year in "selected markets".

As much as I joke around, this is actually a pretty impressive list of features. It's a tough market to break into, so there's no telling if it will be enough. With a clever ad campaign, though, Nokia might just convince people that their product is the fruit of the Lume.

And hey, if it's worth anything, I already have an idea! It could go something like this: "WhyPhone? Blandroid? Just say Yes-kia!"

...And this is why no one lets me make ad campaigns.

Damn. That's actually impressive. Never thought Nokia would get into the higher end smart phone game. Doubt it'll take hype away from iPhone 5. Fanboys will be fanboys, especially when it comes to iProducts. Who knows though, maybe we will see everyone carrying Nokias around again like they used to. If their smart phone is as durable as their old clunkers were, this may just be my next phone.

Nice phone that boasts a sexy screen. I wonder how it compares to my HTC One X (quad core version) HTC modded Super IPS LCD2 screen at 4.7" 720x1280. Actually screw that Nokia's screen! the fact that this is the first phone to have Windows 8 phone on it.... now thats REAL news!

Gotta love Nokia, one of their phones can take the beating of about 500 iPhone's. I really hope they've managed to balance the durability of their previous phones with the sleek, simplistic look of this phone. Also I just noticed that it looks just like an old iPod Nano except without the click-wheel, oh the irony. :D

I prefer Samsung's lineup but this is quite impressive too.

I won't buy Nokia though, I had enough of their shit service and I don't like Windows Phone.

I used to like Nokia before Android and I do wish they jump onboard the Android wagon but I guess its good for them to get more into the smartphone market although I don't like WinOS phones, tried one in store and it doesn't feel that good to be honest, a bit too simple for my tastes.

Nokia hit it out of the park with the Lumia. Now this. GG, Nokia. You might be the HTC of Windows Mobile phones. Just when I thought you were heading down the same path as RIM and their Blackberry line, you managed to grab hold of something relevant to what people want, other than Phones For Geriatrics™.

Wireless charging, so nice, I can't wait to see that appear in every phone/device the next few years. I don't know how, but it sounds epic!
Then some other company *cough cough* will adopt it and then start another round of legal battles XD

[/flamebait]

In all honesty, the Pureview line does seem pretty interesting.

There are tings that i like about this. One of them is NOT the color and how hideous looks. But the 1080 screen, the wireless charging... etc. The problem i have is the poor app support. Lets hope better apps drop soon.
As for me, i might be smitten with the new Motorola line up...

Ps watch what you believe about the PureView camera...

that would be assuming people actually care about windows phone which they dont with wp7, and I still dont see anywhere near the amount of interest in wp8

Yea I am aware that the ones to be released won't have the insane 41MP cam. Is it not as good as it claims to be?
This one is 8.7MP. Nokia dropped Carl Zeiss.

Who needs a 41MP cam anyway? Especially on such a small display? Maybe if you play it on a projector it's pretty nice but 41MP is just bombarding the memory and same pic quality in the phone.

From what I rmbr, pretty sure they are still using Carl Zeiss lenses. Well at least the pics still display em that way O__O

I suppose the 41MP is kinda overkill. Then again who knows? Like years ago, the tech we have today would seem unnecessary/overkill. I always thought that the 808's camera was more of a proof of concept (and bragging rights I suppose?) rather than to make it mainstream. :)

Read a news page and it stated "8.7MP Carl Zeiss PureView with aperture f/2.0"
My bad. There was one site I read that stated "Nokia dropped CZ in favor of PureView". What a joke.

The 808 was seriously just a flop. Bragging rights won't work either.

Not yet, anyway. They may be hoping to create that sort of hype with announcements like this. Only time will tell if it pays off.

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.

@Psionic Roshambo AI assisted game creation is kinda already here, there was recently that AI that can turn any 2D image into a fully modeled 3D object, it's not perfect, but it's a starting point, beats starting from zero
