The best tip for playing WoW... find a friend to play with. Seriously, having a friend speeds things up a lot. Triple XP kinda does that. You'll get to lvl 60 within days and get access to Burning Crusade where things really kick off.

That and, follow quests until they get too easy (unless you like aiming for 100% lore achievements) then move on to the next area.

Now excuse me whilst I play Guild Wars 2.

Alright im here to squash these two who have never played wow deep enough to enjoy it. WoW is amazing it has everything you could imagine from an MMO and thats why it has and still is undisputed MMO King. WoW is not filled with 12 year olds but more than enough early twenties who get upset when you leave and don't say anything. It has a deep deep lore that spans across tons of books and manga and i have played guild wars 2 its not amazing. People are on a guildwars 2 wagon just like the SWTOR Bandwagon about 4 months ago, see how well that turned out. Trust me WoW is great, Protip is Start on a good Server: I play Bleeding Hollow US, its a great server, Also i rolled horde and am a horde fanboy it has a little bit of a ruder player base than alliance but more hardcore raiders. In Battlegrounds it feels Alliance wins alot more now (Which isn't true and it used to be the opposite way everyone said horde won too much) it actually is based on what time you pvp due to older people at work and younger teens. As a new player i would suggest Rolling either a Paladin or a warrior if you like magic do a Mage or Warlock. At 55 make a DK they are my personal favorite.
Find a guild you like and meet people
Dont get tunnel vision in one aspect of the game, if you only raid and nothing else you will get burned out on it.
And Also ALWAYS play on Expac launch nights, that is the craziest funnest thing ever tons of world pvp people everywhere true war and madness.

And to the one saying wow requires no skill, i bet you didn't do much Heroic raiding, alot of people like to say this when they were too bad to make it to the Hardmodes. It makes no sense. Also the CoD Crowd is about a 100000000x worse.

They revamped 1-60 with Cataclysm and it is a ton of fun and this is from a veteran Player, i love the new quest and how much they bring you into the game, and the quest now move you into the right direction alot smoother and give you options.

In just about every thread where someone does not like a certain online multiplayer game they almost always end up whining about "annoying 12-year olds". I really do not consider that a valid complaint for whining about a game. If these 12-year olds for some reason disturbs you so much then you'll always have the option of ignoring them and finding nicer people to play with.

Neither of those things are overly hard to do so please do us a favor by doing that, stop complaining and by having some fun instead.

I'll agree with Xuphor on this one. GW2 isn't my favorite MMO ever, but it's still leagues better than World of noskillcraft.

WoW fanboys can cry all they want, you're playing a social game that requires no skill. At least, no skill that every single other MMO doesn't already require (except plenty of MMOs take it a step above that basic crap).
EDIT: and i'd like to add there's nothing wrong with that either. WoW maintains a huge fanbase because anyone can play it with ease, it has a metric fuckton of PvE content, and has some fun PvP content even if PvP in a no-skill game is a bit of a joke.
It has a lot going for it, just nothing that requires any talent or skill. Which should be fine for pleeenty of people.

OP, if you DO want to play, you better have a whole lot of people to play with. The only point of WoW is to be a social butterfly. It's best with friends (though you could just get new, better friends who play good MMOs). I'm just asusming you don't since you came here to ask for tips.

Well after ignoring the pointless replies and trolls I listened to the serious people and played this game for quite a few hours. Although I do agree there are other MMO's which do require a little more skill WoW still is an amazing game and I do not regret the purchase, I even got Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm and I have my pre-order on Mists of Pandaria ready to go.

I can see myself playing this game for a long time.

I no longer play wow now days because it requires to much time that I don't have.
Though I was stuck in the game for about 4 years, and I hate to say I enjoyed every second of it.
If it wasn't for world of warcraft I would barely know any English at all.

It's really sad though as soon someone talk about WoW there are 90% comments of butthurt people that just keep crying crocodile tears because they didn't find the game fun. He didn't ask how much you peolpe hate wow, he asked people that plays or have played it for tips & tricks.

So I'm going to give my share of tips:

• Join a high level social guild, it give's a lot of perks like faster mount speed, more gold looted and much more. For a list of all perks Click Me.(it's also fun to talk to people or just observe their talk)
• When you reach level 15 you can enter "Random Looking for group" which is a very nice feature. It put's you in a queue for a dungeon and when there is enough people you will be teleported to the dungeon. I myself find dungeons to be the perfect change of air when you are tired of questing. • The World of Warcraft homepage have even more information you might find usefull. Click Me.
• Loot everything! Even gray items that are worthless can still grant you some money when you sell it to a vendore. White/green/blue/purple items are always useable by someone if not yourself. Check the auction house if the stuff you carry and don't want have any value for other people.
• Level up Professions. They are all usefull and there is probably one that suits your need/playstyle. Myself I always take Engineering Since it's the most enjoyable profession in my eye's. Click Me for more information about professions. Oh and don't forget to pick up first aid. No matter what race/class you play. First aid will be usefull.

Well that's about what I can think of right now, hope it's for some use for you =).

PS: Don't have second though about asking for help in the game. Most of the time people in WoW will be glad to help you. But there are asshole's everywhere. If you encounter one, just ignore them, don't let them get the best of you. Some people just hate everyone.

Don't pay for a subscription, join a private server with friends. I would never pay...what is it now? $15 a month or something?...for an MMO as easy as WoW. You can usually find private servers tailored to what you're looking for and last I checked (admittedly 3 or 4 years ago) there are tons of servers up still with the latest content.

It's funny seeing people fail though, since "90%" of the WoW player base can't do it. It's so damn rewarding when I could save them from failing though.

Also some tips here, if you want to raid:
1. FIND THE MOST FUN CLASS TO PLAY. this is very important. Sometimes, due to mechanics, your class can be severely underbalanced against other classes - if you'd like to PVP, or maybe even in some PVE situations (pure damage classes get more DPS than the hybrids will, and this won't really change; it's been like this since WoW started). I liked making alts, and played most of the classes available, but I'm a support by heart and I used to always go back to tanking/healing when I used to play WoW.

2. Have patience. Some people will fuck up, sure, but it's just a game. you may be stuck with some mouthbreather at work, and WoW isn't different at all. you're going to put lots of love and work into your main character, and although it is a MMO, don't let others deter you from giving up. Sometimes you'll meet that click in groups, or end up with the complete opposite.

3. AUCTION HOUSE!!! This is very important. Auction Houses can make the game experience much more easy, or a complete hell. It's not required by any means, but it's very useful for finding level-up gear, leveling up your professions, and most importantly, having gold to gear your characters (gems and enchants) that can get you into leading guilds or stuck in constant LFD for shitty gear.

Also play sparingly, don't put your life into it...it's just a game. I did, and honestly I don't regret it, but without it I'm sure I'd have been much better off.

My real life friend actually pulled me into it hahaha xD We both found a guild so yeah we've been enjoying our time with a bunch of guys our age just questing and doing dungeons
