Is this possible? I don't think it is, as the game won't be installed into the registry and stuff, but is there any way to do it? I have Diablo 2 LOD on my laptop and I no longer have the disc, and i want it on my desktop.
Haha, I love youAny time I have tried it, it has worked. Just copy the entire install directory and run the EXE. Although perhaps games with more advanced DRM would complain about stuff.
So am I right in assuming the only thing that ties a game to a computer when installing is the registry stuff? That depends on the game, but D2 has very little registry ties, and those entries that do exist (such as battle.net gateway lists) don't reference files with static locations.
That depends on the game again. In most cases that's how it should be, but then there's games that use system-altering DRM that do sanity checks on whether files running from the location they're supposed to be, and they install kernel modules and crap like that.So am I right in assuming the only thing that ties a game to a computer when installing is the registry stuff?
Well yeah aside from DRM. I'm talking about older games, shoulda been more clear there. That depends on the game again. And what does that mean exactly? You may be able to move it and use a symbolic link to map it to it's new location

Essentially, the files are in a new location, and in their original location are "links" to the new location. However, programs and the OS itself will see these "links" as the actual files. So in effect, the files are still where they were before, but no longer taking up very much room (just a few bytes to point to the new location). And what does that mean exactly? You may be able to move it and use a symbolic link to map it to it's new location
