TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK each summer -- TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.

There are thousands of TED talks available for anyone to watch at any hour of the day, online. They're all devoted to sharing ideas and concepts outside the norm, or on the cutting edge of technology,
and yet there are still so few people who have heard of them.

So in this thread I want to present TED talks to my favorite people: 'tempers.
I want to share the important messages that are going unheard.
And I want you to share TED talks that speak to you as well.

For a full listing of all available TED talks, go to http://www.ted.com/
Many of them have been posted to youtube, which makes them more easy to embed here.
But whether you share a link to TED.com, or to youtube; Just share what you feel is important.

Feel free to converse, ask questions, and discuss.

Many of you know that I'm a guy with a dirty job (as a shepherd)
so who better to begin with than Mike Rowe?

*WARNING* There are some aspects of this video which are graphic in detail, but they're realities of the world we live in.

At no point did I ever sign up to bite testicles off of lambs, and I'm pretty certain I'll never be asked to do such a thing

My Community college uses TED a lot. Especially when talking about ideas and trying share certain ideaology with their students. I'm assuming that a lot more of the University levels use TED, too. I'm just saying.

It's really interesting, and has A LOT of topics.

While this isn't as inspiring as most TED Talks, it's still quite informative! Drying your hand completely...with only one paper towel.

No, it's people talking about Technology, Entertainment, Design, and much more.

For instance, here's one of my favorites:
Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had a stroke. She lived through it, and she recovered from it, and now she can tell the story of exactly how it feels to have a stroke, with the words and experience of a brain scientist.

That's a pretty high compliment. It ranks right up there with the guy that called me a modern Mark Twain. So thank you.
But the truth of the matter is that this is the core of what we are here at GBAtemp;
Intelligent people sharing important ideas in numerous arenas.

This is what I want to return to.

I've never personally listened to one of these, or personally contributed. That aside, it is in my mind that anywhere the trading of ideas and brainstorming occurs is a-okay. GBAtemp has seemed to deviate from that for a while now. One of the very reasons I stopped posting so much is a direct impact of this perception. The stuff @[member='Gahars'], and you post have made me feel like contributing more lately. My hat comes off to the both of you. :) I suppose when I find the time to listen to one or more of these I'll have a sit session.

EDIT: I feel ashamed. I forgot Foxi4, and Rydian. Both of which I see a lot and enjoy reading their posts. FAST, and Xist are also great too.

Very interesting. I shall have to look at this more when I get the time. :)
Thank you for this, as this is how I imagined GBATemp was when I joined and started trying to contribute

(Don't bother using the English captions. If you don't understand what he says, just watch it again).

I love the ones about social issues. There's one I remember especially well: Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg on "Why we have too few women leaders"

I really like the talks you're all sharing, but that last one was just a little heavy.
Lets go to something slightly lighter and more humorous; Shawn Achor speaking on positive psychology.

Success doesn't lead to happiness. Happiness leads to success.
But seriously watch it, he's hilarious.

Richard Dawkins talking about why the universe and how it works seems strange and improbable to humans.

Thank you for coming by and sharing, Dave. You're severely missed around here.

This is absolutely incredible! Why haven't I heard of this before!?

SixthSense

This is the sort of thing that you get when you tell TED to "surprise you" with an hour of ingenious talks.
