EA and BioWare are bringing back what is considered to be "the first great western RPG" in a new free to play title called "Ultima Forever".

The official website reads, "The first great Western RPG has been lovingly restored in Ultima Forever - return to the Ultima series in BioWare's new cross-platform action RPG. Accept the challenge from Lady British and save the land of Britannia. Play as the Fighter or the Mage and travel alone or with friends, restore virtue and become the Avatar!"

Richard Garriot, famed designer of the Ultima series, will not be involved however.

No release date was announced, but a beta sign up can be found below.

Hasn't anyone in EA noticed that Bioware isn't exactly the best company to be making YET another MMORPG? Just let them do Offline single player games, it's what they do best.

Yes, I know. That was the "ultimate RPG" I was talking about. This means he can't use Sosaria and the old characters, if he ever pulls it through.

I'm a long time Ultima player (since I was 8), and have played Ultima Online for probably 10 years (till two years ago), and I'm utterly disgusted by how EA treats this great franchise.

Give it back to Lord British, darn! He even expressed desire to continue it!

Instead they give it to Bioware, which made the shameful Dragon Age 2. (obviously I'm sure this won't be up to DA1 quality)

It's not a MMO, it's a F2P title.

F2P and MMO are not mutually exclusive. There are F2P single player games with some kind of interaction between other players, F2P Multiplayer games, F2P FPS games, F2P MMORPGS...

The way they acquire funding wouldn't make it any less of an MMO.

Oh! I always associated F2P as in some kind of MMO, that is actually F2P. Still... they could just remake UO with a few things updated (sound/graphics mostly cosmetic stuff) and it would sell like cupcakes...

I mean, look at Ultima 8 and Ultima 9, EA rushed the heck out of them, and they were reduced to crappy games.

We're sure that this one too will receive the same treatment. Also,

No Lord British = TOTAL CRAP

Alright, I saw on the official page that it says "play alone or with your friends" So I guess it's a standard (Multiplayer) RPG. Though your source had MMO as a tag at the top of the page, which caused me some confusion at first

    One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.

    Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
