Hello to all. I use this forum from long ago, getting always info on Nintendo Wii hacking.

For those who don´t know, wii gives a world of hacking possibilities, hardmod, softmod with backup cd´s and softmod with USB harddisk containing the backups, everything without denying internet and multiplayer access - and I have all these kinds of mods, and sometimes I update everything, and also have homebrew software like megadrive and snes emulators etc. etc I also installed the wiikey2 by myself, just following an youtube video.... it´s really a big party, I can do whatever I want on it, just using the forum and my brain!

Now I bought an Xbox 360, but, reading some posts, it seems to be harder to hack it than wii. Is it a way to do it just via software modding? If a hardware modificaton is really needed, which one is the best? And how about xbox live connection? And, once modded, how about new games that need updates? it´s a new world for me, and since it´s Microsoft, I have even more fear to get screwed when trying to hack it by myself.... here in Brazil, the hardmodding costs about US$50,00, but they don´t tell you which technology they use, and don´t give details about issues and upgrading - they just want to sell the service...

Could you guys help me? I really prefer to do it by myself...

I have a black Xbox 360 slim En-US 4gb, that one which comes with kinect. If you need more info about it, just ask.

Thanks in advance!!

No softmods are available for 360.

For slims, you can flash a DVD drive (although I'm pretty sure you can only flash Lite-On drives right now, no Hitachis) or you can RGH it as long as you have the right motherboard and...I think if it's before a certain dashboard update. Both methods will cost you some money unfortunately. I'm not exactly an expert at this, but I know someone who is.

Offline you'll have to RGH it, free games and homebrew. Online you can DVD flash but you have to burn games and no custom content. A slim is hard to flash so try RGH.

I see that you want to keep XBLive.

I'd suggest on getting it flashed.
Slim Liteons require either a Sputnik QSB or a Kamikazi hack to gain write access.
And since it's really easy to screw it up it's just better to get it done.

You could also buy a ODDE (only requires you to update the ODDE instead of constandly updating the flashed drive)
It's ~100 dollars but it's worth it since you don't need to burn games anymore.
It only requires you to have a dump of your keys which is entirely doable by yourself.

RGHing is also great for emulators etc but then again since you already got a Wii then you can use that for emulation.
Emulation on the 360 isn't as good as the Wii and homebrew support is poor.

RGH'd console are pretty much for people that really don't care about Live at all.

For Slims, your motherboard revision is either Trinity or Corona, and both are able to utilize a version of RGH.. The dashboard update limitation you're thinking of is pretty much a phat issue at the moment, and that's just in regards to RGH 1.0.. If you really want to go for RGH, wait for the Coolrunner 3 to be out, and pick up one of the Xecuter Demons as well. Demon plugs up to coolrunner, and it has built in NAND reading/writing, and in the future it'll be the source of some pretty damn awesome hardware addons for the 360. Demon also supports a dual NAND setup, so you'll be able to use XBL on your stock NAND, and use the homebrew and backup functionality on the hacked NAND.

Honestly, I'd head over to the Team Xecuter forums and ask around there about what they'd recommend, TX is the way to go for all of your RGH needs.

Well, you can also go for a dual NAND setup (one stock, one hacked) so you could still access Xbox Live that way, but you wouldn't be able to play the backups on the stock NAND. It's true that emulation for the 360 platform is kind of lame, but with RGH and the ability to run the XDK kernel, you'll see a lot more developments in the homebrew department in the future. There'll be a point where emulation on the 360 will be a lot better than the Wii, as the hardware allows more options and resources to developers.

Note: As far as the title update issue, you can just google the title update for the game and download it.. After that, you'll just need to place it in the cache folder that's on the root of your HDD. In my honest opinion, soldering on the 360 motherboard isn't all that bad as long as you're careful.. If you're not that experienced, I recommend practicing on some damaged circuit boards until you get the hang of it.

^ pretty much that yes.

However.
You should NOT use your Live enabled GT on a your RGH.
To prevent accidental booting of homebrew which IS detectable by MS and WILL LEAD to a ban.

Pretty sure that one should be considered obvious, anyone who is stupid enough to do that deserves the ban, lol.

Or if he'd like FSD can download them for him. I personally went the Dual NAND route, running Fusion on the hacked NAND and Stock of course on the normal one. I decided to use an ODDE on the normal NAND, so I could keep the USB Loading of games while on Xbox Live. If you like Live, flash the disc drive. Or dump your drive keys, OFW and get an ODDE. If you don't care much for Live, get it RGH'd. If you care somewhat for Live, and want it but still want to run homebrew and such get a dual NAND RGH. (DemoN of course, but I'm running a cheaper chip called the "X360 Pro v4", which is a "All In One Chip". A RGH chip, NAND Reader/Writer, and a dual NAND chip in one.)

FSD has a lot of issues when it comes to downloading title updates, such as not being able to find any for quite a few games.. I wouldn't suggest that because you may get him believing that this is a perfect way to do it, and if it doesn't show a TU for a game, that there isn't one.. That would seriously suck if he ended up encountering a game breaking bug just because you recommended something that's seriously flawed.

100% agreed.
But then again you can't underestimate the stupidity of noobies.

I also got blamed for a ban trice because some noobie threw his jTAG online.
I explicitly warned them not to do it cause they have no business on Live.

I've also seen pics of EXTREMELY messed up drives after an MRA attempt.
I had to fix quite a few of them and it's a pain in the bum.
Yet the owner told me that they where skilled at soldering (skilled at messing it up lol)

Best way is indeed a RGH with Dual NAND.
Next best thing (and more simple) is to just flash the Drive or use an ODDE.

Hm. I haven't experienced any such issue, but I'm only one person. So he should manually download the TUs, and FTP it to his 360 for easy accessibility.

Same here.
Although I hardly use TU's on my RGH.

Title updates which can't be copied to the hard drive from USB are annoying as hell. I have to get my transfer cable and open up a file explorer and it's such a pain! :)

Thank you very much everybody

I see now that are too many ways to do it, but all of them are via hardware soldering, which I have some fear..

OK, I give up homebrews and emulators, plan to keep running them on Wii. And the only thing I like on Live is the possibility to download and try demos of the games prior to buy them, but I could just download ths backup iso´s and burn. (here I have another question, is it possible to run backup from an ordinary HDD with flash+ODDE?)

About playing via multiplayer on Live, I tried it on HOMEFRONT and GEARS OF WAR 2, and both requires a GOLD account to play online - I don´t know if most games follow this same case, but also I am giving up to play online, it´s too expensive!!

So, how I flash the drive and install this flash and ODDE? Is it revertible to stock state? Do you have some newbie-level tutorials, videos or something to point me up?

And how about compatibility? Will it work on any xbox360?

One last question: I see it´s annoying to do the Title Updates, and DinohScene don´t care about them.. Are them really important for single-player? Do you usually see big bugs on 360 games that really need updating to be playable? Do they bring new levels, weapons or something like that make it worth to do it?

Sorry by the lot of questions at the same post!! Very thanks in advance!!

ODDE allows you to have ISO images on a external HDD.
You only need to dump your DVD Keys.

XBLA is downloadable as a Demo but in order to gain achievements etc, you'll have to buy it.

Online gaming requires XBLive Gold.
I bet that there are some promotions like a month for 1 dollar.

Hook the DVD drive up to a Sata port (of you have a compatible chipset that is) and the 360 for power.
Then use Jungleflasher (and it's manual) to dump the DVD keys.

Title updates are downloaded automatically via XBLive.
No need to fiddle around with them on flashed/ODDE/stock consoles.

Welcomes ;]

Ok, let´s see I understood correctly (once my English and "XBox-lish" newbage can lead me to a mis-understanding).

1-I open the XB360 console. Then plug the XB360 DVD drive to an external computer via SATA, and leave it connected to the console to gather power.

2- Then I use this jungleflasher app on the PC to dump the DVD keys (and flash the drive also??) - what exactly mean thes key-dumping procedure?

It looks easy, is it all? How about ODDE, is it a chip, or software? Do I have to buy it, and solder somewhere? I do it before or after the flash and key dump?

So, if I understood correctly, with this hack I can update the titles, download games demos and play online (with a gold account) ?

Sorry for the boring questions, but I need a clear view of everything before opening my new little toy :P

Partially.

You've got the hook up part right.

Use jungleflasher to dump the keys (it comes with manual so it's not that hard)
Dumping keys means that you make a dump of your firmware + DVD keys (these are essential. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT EVER LOOSE THEM)

An ODDE is a modchip like device.
It allows you to play games off off an external HDD.
It's basically plug and play and is pretty simple to install.
DON'T USE FORCE, just apply a gentle pressure.

Then place the firmware dump on the supplied microSD
This device will use the firmware+key to fool the 360.

You can update your console with the xkey Passthrough mode.
(just update the xKey before you update the 360)

Online play is only for Gold accounts yes.
Gamedemo's and XBLA is for free and paid accounts.

It's alright ;]

Thank you very much! I did some research on the xkey and probably will buy it in ebay... Is it the only/best ODDE to buy?

I´ve seem some info about compatibility with firmware and drive models. Where I find these information on my console?

The xkey is one of the best ODDE's out there.

What is the mfg date of your 360?

I am taking a look at Jungle Flasher Website, and I am thinking on just installing the LT clip for now.. It would be cheaper...In this case, I must forget LIVE for any purpose, right?
