Could cost less than expected.

In an interesting piece of news, MCV has been told by a retail source that the trade rate — what the stores pay for each unit — is £146. When 3DS was launched in March 2011 many retailers took their prices down to just above the trade rate in an effort to get customers into stores and, potentially, buy extra accessories and games.

I'm not sure letting retailers set the price is the best idea.
Personally I think it is. If Nintendo says "look they'll cost £146 but you HAVE to sell them for no less than £170" then that is what the retailers have to do.

Over here during the launch period supermarkets like Asda, Tesco & Sainsburys sell these extremely cheaply, in fact some take a loss just so people come into their stores and do their weekly shop there. The only problem is for specific game retailers who can't do that, they can't compete with their prices but still consumers are the ones who win out of this.

Why not? Nintendo will still get their share of the cash, it's just the retailers themselves that will earn less if they decide to do so.
I wouldn't exactly trust stores to set a fair price on items.

That's why it's good you know the trade price, so you know exactly how much extra the store is charging you,

Or how much the store is losing on each sale of the console.

I was so shocked at the listed price that I thought it was a hoax or something, I was pleasantly surprised. Knowing that most stores will be pricing competetively really makes me excited. I don't plan on getting one, but this is a great sign for the 3DSlite (come on, you KNOW there will be one) with both pricing and design changes.

Ladies and gentlemen, most helpful post of the year.
Certainly not a ploy for post count or anything, lord no.

i doubt that we as the customer would be paying £150, amazon uk website are charging £179.99 for the console itself which is no where near that, from what i have read from the OP is that the wholesaler is buying at bulk at £146 a piece, it doesn't mean we will get it at that price.

plus on top of that you have to add the charger and cradle pack which will cost an extra £19.99 on top which will make it £199.98, no where near £146 is it?

With this trade-in you are most likely gonna be spending more in the long run. Seeing as you would have had to buy the 3DS beforehand - which is about £120, now I think. Then after trading it in, you spend an extra £150 on the XL, pushing the amount of money spent around £270. And it goes even higher if you got the 3DS for the ridiculous launch price.

atm cex give you £69 cash for a nintendo 3ds boxed which is nothing, i paid £200 for it when it first launched so i feel quite sick if i have to sell the thing for the 3ds xl but that's life you get fudged over all the time, especially from game who offer you 10% cash for your goods and then sell it at 90% higher at a profit second hand, like you said it all adds up.

i think by the time i sell this 3ds to get the xl it will be worthless unless i sell it to friends or family.
