Initially, my wii used to work just fine before I started updating everything (homebrew channel, usb loader gx, etc). My wbfs formatted hdd would load up games just fine and I had no problems whatsoever. After doing some kind of cios update, I lost all functionality to my usb drive.

So, what I did was, I formatted my wii, upgraded from 4.1 to 4.2 and re-softmodded using the latest guide on 'another forum'. (found out in the end that this was pointless..) So then with the newly done softmod, my syscheck looked like this: http://syscheck.softwii.de/n6390RVO
The problems with the above configuration are;
  • -homebrew channel will not open unless I disconnect my usb hard drive.
  • Usb loader gx 3.0 will hang at 'Initialize usb device'
  • Other loaders either freeze and can't detect the usb drive for some reason..
So then I downgraded homebrew channel from 1.1.0 to 1.0.8 and I still have the same problems.

After updating my cios to d2x cios beta v9 r49, usb loader gx stopped hanging at 'initialize usb device' and now counts down from :20, resulting in 'usb device not found' and homebrew channel still doesn't open unless I disconnect the usb drive.

Here is my syscheck after doing the d2x v9 update: http://syscheck.softwii.de/94qKwxhj

If you can help me resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated. There is no problem with my hdd. This is more than likely an issue with cIOS. I am not sure which cIOS I had initially when everything worked before doing updates. It was more than likely some older stable version before v7...I think.

Instead of looking at guides on "other forums" I suggest you take a look at Modmii and re-softmod your Wii using the guide it generates. So far softmods from Modmii are practically flawless (unless you purposefully screw it up), so everything should work afterwords.

I might take a look at that guide as a last resort. I just don't feel like I have to 're-softmod' again. Maybe.. But sorry I wasn't specific enough. I used the latest softmod guide on wiihacks for 4.2. They're up to date as far as I know. Thanks for the heads up on the modmii guide. I had no clue it existed. It seems promising as it looks like it gives you more of a 'custom configuration'.

Alright, I just remodded using modmii. Homebrew channel still freezes up with the USB hdd connected and configurable usb loader does not detect my drive. Thinking I might have to reformat the hdd. Any recommended ways to back it up on my pc so I don't lose anything? It's about 60gb of data :|

Wii backup manager detects my WBFS drive just fine and lists all my games. I'm going to reformat it as FAT32 this time.. I'll keep updating with results. Thanks for helping!

Thinking I might have to reformat the hdd

uhh yeah? did you just ignore what i said?

I would try reformatting your HDD, then trying again.

Alright.. So I formatted my entire hd and did everything according to modmii (which helped greatly) and made progress. BUT, when loading up the supplied cfg loader with my usb hdd connected, it freezes up. Homebrew channel now loads up normally with the usb plugged in. I went ahead and downloaded usb loader gx 3.0 and tried it. It counted down from :8 instead of :20 and did not detect my usb hdd. So I changed the loader settings to boot/standard IOS 222 and it counted from :8, reloaded 222 and VOILA! It detected my usb hdd and showed the game in it.

Now.. How do I get usb loader gx 3.0 to initially load IOS 222 from the start without having to wait for the countdown and reload?

Make a folder on your desktop, and copy everything from drive to that folder.

Awesome, thanks. One more question.. Now, with the way I setup my external usb through modmii (apps on external hdd, fat32, wbfs folder, etc).. Homebrew channel should list the apps on my external usb when I remove the sd card right? It's not..

Press 1 and select USB drive.

The option is 'greyed out' for me. Usb hdd connected on '0'. Usb loader gx 3.0 detects it just fine. I had read somewhere that HBC 1.1.0 breaks compatibility with certain usb hdd. I'll try going back to 1.0.8 unless there is a different fix for this.

Downgraded HBC channel and the option for USB device is still 'greyed out' for me. Not sure what seems to be the problem here. Noob question, but, since usb loader gx 3.0 detected my drive with IOS222 as boot standard, is there any way to change that option for homebrew channel?

It won't work if it was available, and no.
