"If they decide to increase the spec numbers, will the consumers be able to realise the difference enough so that they can understand it's much superior to today's machine," Iwata said in an interview with The Telegraph.

"If they beef up the processing power, that simply means much more work for software developers to take advantage of those spec numbers. So I have to ask the question if that type of differentiation really makes sense.

I love all these comparison "news" articles popping up.
Next time on "this shit doesn't even exist", we'll ask Bill Gates if the 4ds will provide a more immersive experience than the 3ds.
Since its cool to ask speculative questions to a competitor.
Of course Iwata isn't going to care about power.
Maybe they should have news about what Sony or ms thinks about the new super ultra mega dolphin Wii u coming in 2039.

I love how everyone is going on like the ps4 and the xbox 720 (they better not call it that) are going to be the most powerful things in the world. We know absolutely nothing about either of them and we only have a good idea of them specs of the wiiU. Can we at least wait till we have some idea of of what Microsoft and Sony are bringing to the table before we make baseless comparisons?

The way I understand this, and like this post if I'm wrong, is that with the way games already look on the PS3 and 360, are they going to be really be leap forwards with the next gen. With the Wii to HD, the difference is black and white. But with 360 and PS3, it might not be so easier to tell. And as he said, it makes more work for the devs to longer to get the most out of the machine, and is that worth it? I wouldn't think so.

Graphically I really could care less if games look 'even better'. They look fine as is. If I want uber graphics, I own a PC for a reason.
I just want console games to be able to handle the damn games on them. So many games have lag issues because the console can't quite keep up.
Dynasty Warriors is the most obvious thing I can think of. Whenever you get large groups of cannon fodder and a few named characters, the game starts lagging like a bitch. It's annoying.
In Dark Souls, Blighttown had some pretty huge slowdowns in places.
I recall hearing about Skyrim lag issues too.

As long as next gen kills those problems, i'm fine with no graphical leap.

I fail to see how this is news. Someone is speculation about not one, but 2 systems that are no where near ready to be even announced?

Honestly, what I'd like to see more in the next gen is the power to have the environment be their own characters. Like have the leaves in bushes fall off or move when you're walking through them, instead of having them go through the player. I like what Uncharted did (I just beat it, shit I love that game) where Nathan would run up the steps and actually look like he was.

Graphics are important; they can make games all the more immersive and engaging. Of course, you just can't have graphics at the expense of everything else.

I would like a graphical boost in Sony and Microsoft's next consoles, but I would also like to see a focus on bringing down the costs of developing games. They are so expensive to produce these days that even a lukewarm reception in the market can be enough to kill a developer. It's depriving us of riskier, more experimental titles and I honestly think it's a real shame. If we want the medium to really grow and evolve, we are going to have to work on this.

Isn't that already the case on the PC? Graphics don't really improve anymore...they just get more brown and shiney.

On the remark itself...It's pretty obvious the nintendo president is going by that stance, no matter whether it's true or false. Or did anyone really think the fellow is gonna say "yeah...it's very possible the wiiU is going to be the technological underdog again in one or two years. Our competition will have much better graphics"?

I disagree with Iwata considering the coming gen. The graphical leap will be evident (Don't believe me?, check out Watch Dogs and Star Wars: 1313). I do doubt that the generation after that will have as large of a leap, though. By then, we should move away from just improving visuals and work on other aspects of a game such as improved AI, increased scale and general fixes for other glitches nagging games these gen.

These great experimental titles are available on handhelds and the PC. We still get great unique games on those platforms even if they are generally absent from consoles.

Obviously improvements will be liked, but I can't really see much that the NeXbox and PS4 can do to really be new. I mean, yeah, the WiiU is HD, but if that is all that it would be I wouldn't get it. It better be HD; that's a given. I just can't imagine myself saying, "I'm gonna buy the PS4 so I can play the next shooter! YEAH!" At least the WiiU is interesting.
A giant DS is interesting.

I would like gaming machines in the future to reach a photo realistic level. Let me be clear, not all need games need or should be this way but that is progress, pushing the limits of hardware and the imagination.

I too want photo-realistic graphics just so I can have a Pikmin game that looks like this,

See? Progress isn't bad, Nintendo naturally bashes technological progress claiming that there will be a ceiling in terms of graphics when their real motive is well being cheap, but lets challenge developers to push the limits and go beyond what we know now. That is progress. Let me reiterate not all games should or need to progress graphically but it should not be disregarded.

If you want games to offer the very best visuals available, then just buy a high-end PC. You aren't going to find that on consoles.

True, though those developers tend to be smaller. I appreciate what they're doing (or, at least in some cases, trying to do), but I wouldn't mind seeing more come from the big name developers. The Activisions and EAs of the gaming industry have a lot of clout; if they were to push riskier projects more, the impact on other publishers/developers would certainly be greater.
