According to this guy who attended E3, Nintendo was going to show Retro's new game at their E3 conference but Retro decided "it wasn't ready" at the last minute.

Why should you believe this? Because if you check the guy's post history, he's actually at E3.

If that's not enough proof for you, ShockingAlberto, a confirmed insider from Neogaf said the same thing and that they even had a demo to show.

So I guess Nintendo didn't really intend to show Nintendo Land for 20 minutes straight. ;p

We already " knew" that they was holding things back, but it would have been nice
if they was ready.
No we didn't. We knew that they didn't show games not in the launch window but we didn't know about Retro's game being held back.

Ok, let me put it this way... Wii (maybe not specialty u) had a gut feeling that they was holding back.
Of course not this exactly this.

Even if the game itself wasn't ready, they couldn't put together any sort of trailer for the conference? Screenshots? Official announcement? Anything?

They didn't want to disappoint viewers with a sub-par game. It makes more sense to show a polished almost-finished game.

Nintendo is probably going for the surprise factor. A simple announcement wouldn't suffice.

Not when you have nothing else to show, no.

I understand the allure of the surprise factor, but when you having nothing else to show, it's only going to make it worse for everyone (like 20 minutes of Nintendo Land worse). Plus, even if they had nothing to show, they could have pulled a dramatic announcement (it's the end of the show, the lights dim, someone important walks out, reveals the game they're working on with a logo in the background) perfectly; the lack of solid information would only drive fan excitement and speculation.

Well there's nothing Nintendo could have really done.

Retro was the one that didn't want it announced yet. Nintendo can't just force Retro to show it (well they could but that would obviously strain relations between the two).

So basically Nintendo's conference sucked not because they're Nintendo but because they weren't prepared?

Or because they didn't have anything really new to show us. We all know most of what they displayed was coming, just not when. Now we know when but not what will follow it. It's a vicious but really retarded cycle.

The fact is that Nintendo gave us nothing to at least talk about, nothing to generate hype and speculation, not even a bloody logo. At least a logo would suggest that something is in the works and that we can expect something good from Retro when it's actually unveiled.

Like you said, of course they can. It may not be preferred, but when you're trying to sell people on your new console before it releases (and keep the company stocks up), sometimes you have to do these sorts of things.

Plus, wouldn't Retro want to court the fan interest and hype?

Retro may not want their game announced without a trailer for the surprise factor like I said. I dunno, it's their decision.

But this was at the last minute so it's not like Nintendo had time to change things up.

I'm just nitpicking here, but as we agreed, it's Nintendo's decision (it's their IP, their conference, etc.).

And actually, this wouldn't have been difficult at all. Get a logo for the project (which likely exists already), put the speech together in 5 minutes ("Now, we are proud announce..." etc. etc.), and coordinate everything with the light and sound guys. It's really not that complicated, and it certainly beats trying to create material around something like Nintendo Land.
