Valve has confirmed that DOTA 2 will indeed be a free-to-play game. Along with this announcement was the reveal of the DOTA Store which will handle micro-transactions in the game. Valve is insisting that purchasing in-game items won't be key to success, however.

The Store has been available in the beta which allows players to purchase items created by other users or by the developers themselves. All of the items in this store are to be cosmetic and won't affect the gameplay, which should re-assure those who are afraid that you'll have to pay big bucks in order to stay competitive. You can get in on the game now by purchasing the Early Access Bundle, more details of that are here.

Now onto the discussion at hand. Personally I don't think I'd get into Dota but it seems like a great move by Valve. Although I think some Dota diehards will just complain about some sort of "noob flood" since, honestly, Dota diehards are like the worst people ever. People were complaining about TF2 going F2P because they thought a "noob flood" would occur and ruin the game. It didn't happen there and it won't happen here.

So you don't want to play a great, free game only because Valve will sell hats and other visual customizations that won't affect your experience at all ?

That doesn't make sense at all.

if you are a dota2 diehard and play well, you will probably rise much higher in ranks and dont have to deal with noobs.
you could also 'enjoy' dota1 for free.

It's a free game, they already said the hats won't put the game in anyones favor, it will only be there for looks.

You're lucky they don't go the way of Gunbound and make the game pay to win.

Ironically, the only way to get these hats(aside from buying) is to play the game.

Well if you don't like free games then don't play :3

Haven't we known this for a good, long while now?

Eh, whatever. Valve's good with the whole micro-transaction business (and, you know, they're Valve), so it looks like everyone wins; gamers don't have to pay a cent to enjoy the game while Valve can make a nice profit.

We've known since forever that it'd be F2P with micro-transactions.
Just didn't know what they'd be selling.
At least for sure anyway, I'm sure most of us assumed it'd be hats/cosmetics.

I heard at one point they'd also sell EXP multipliers, dunno' if that's still true and they're just hand-waving it with "it's not equipment".

Yeah they are selling multipliers for battle points, I think you get a hat or something when you level up

An important note here is that Valve also says all heroes will be free/they won't sell heroes.
For now. I hope they don't start charging for them along the way.

Free to play, yaaaay :toot:

And you don't have to buy any other game first *cough*Starcraft2*cough* :P
