For some reason FPS game Doom 3 is getting "remastered" on PS3 & Xbox 360.

This "BFG Edition" will feature:
  • Expansion pack "Resurrection of Evil" new story "The Lost Mission" which includes 7 more levels.
  • Enhanced controls, graphics, lighting & 5.1 surround sound.
  • Optimised for 3D TVs, monitors & head mounted displays.
  • 360 achievements & PS3 trophies and a in game checkpoint save system has been added...really that wasn't in the original Xbox release?
  • Armour mounted torch so that you can shoot and see in the dark at the same time...taking away the only part of the tenseness that the game actually had.
  • Also includes Doom & Doom 2...making it a "definitive" collection...erm what about Ultimate Doom, Final Doom & the underrated Doom 64?

BETHESDA SOFTWORKS ANNOUNCES DOOM 3 BFG EDITION

id Software's Genre-Defining Game Returns This Fall with All-New Content

May 30, 2012 (Rockville, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced that DOOM® 3 BFG Edition will be available this Fall and features DOOM® 3 and the Resurrection of Evil® add-on pack, both of which have been completely re-mastered. The package also includes hours of new content – seven new levels entitled 'The Lost Mission.' DOOM 3 BFG Edition is slated for release for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PC and PlayStation® 3 – marking the first time any DOOM game has ever appeared on the PlayStation® 3.

Re-mastered for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, this genre defining game and its expansion pack offers greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, 'The Lost Mission,' featuring seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have them on the edge of their seats.

DOOM 3, Resurrection of Evil, and 'The Lost Mission' have been optimized in 3D, featuring 5.1 surround sound, Xbox 360 Achievements, PlayStation 3 trophies, improved rendering and lighting, and a new check point save system allowing for smoother progression through the game. id® Software has fine-tuned the controls to bring the intensity of the DOOM single and multiplayer experience to the consoles, and DOOM 3 now features the new armor-mounted flashlight, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time.

"DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release," said John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software. "Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it."

As a special bonus, DOOM 3 BFG Edition will also include the original DOOM® and DOOM® 2 games, making it the definitive collection of the revolutionary games developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre.

If retail, I feel it would be VERY unnecessary. Doom 3 was never that good anyway to even warrant a re-release, it's gameplay has aged (even more so than the originals) & the engine itself was hardly that great even when it was first released. Also for PC gamers (source says its coming to PC but the press release and trailer doesn't mention this)...we got these games AS WELL as Final Doom & Ultimate Doom on sale on Steam for under £8.

Nothing says "our last game bombed" than a reissue of a title no one asked for. Personally remastering Quake 1-3 (throw in Quake 64 version too just for completest sake) may have made much better sense. However this is the first Doom release on a PlayStation console since Final Doom on the PSX.

I really enjoyed Doom and Final Doom but Doom 3 didn't give me the buzz that the previous games did.

I know they are going to include new levels in the re-mastered version, but i don't think that will make the game more playable for me.

I liked Doom3 back then... it wasnt the best game ever, but it was entertaining... and I dont mind the remastered, but I wouldve seen it more as a release as a cheap Downloadable Arcade game.... not as a Retail full price. 20$ downloadable game... sure... 40-50$ retail... GOD NO.

i don't consider the gameplay of the originals to be "aged". they are classics now. just as fun as the day they were released. this doom3 update looks pretty sweet actually. its to bad they didn't include heretic as an unlock-able.

Doom 3 was terrible for pretty much every reason you can think of. To be honest, it's a lousy game for gameplay, the story is freaking terrible and they changed the overall thought process of pretty much every demon model in the game. I think they only really stayed true to about 4 of the monsters, and you only saw a few of them a couple of times in the whole game. But the gameplay was dumb, the storyline didn't really work, and the graphics engine was pretty horrendous and demanding for mediocre visualization, compared to Unreal Engine 3 which started being used in games about a year or so after Doom 3 was released and looked vastly superior by comparison.

I know it's really hard to recreate the magic that was Doom 2: Hell on Earth in a new game with all the realism technology we have today but don't you think that if they used the same concept of level design but actually made it realistic, that a Doom 2 remake would sell like hotcakes fresh out of the oven? No one liked Doom 3, it bombed badly, worse then Rage did I think because people didn't have as high of expectations for Rage.

Oh please, please, please! Doesn't even have to be a sequal. Just remake Doom & Doom 2 with badd-arse graphics. Same level design restrictions. Same turn-aim-fire philosiphy. Same guns. Same levels.

'Aiming' ruined and rooms-above-rooms ruined first person shooters!

Does the new version let me tape a freaking flashlight to my guns? That was the thing that killed it for me. Having to run around with a flashlight, then when something jumps out at me, I have to switch to a gun and start shooting at the thing in the dark. Needs to take a note from Dead Rising 2. Gun + Ducktape + Flashlight = ZOMG! I can see AND shoot.

The new version has your flashlight attached to your armor. So, yeah, you can shoot and have a flashlight out at the same time.

Buying it. Why? Nostalgia. You really think I care if they took away some of the intensity? No. I don't, and I know I'm not the only one. I just hope they keep co-op. Not to mention that I hear it's coming with remastered versions of Doom 1 and 2. Then again, I'm wrong. Oh well. :)

I enjoyed that game, one of the rare instances when I actually bought a game new rather than pirating it or getting it pre-owned. It was different, it attempted to re-invision the series, for some successfully, for others not so much. I don't see what the fuss is all about - if the HD treatment won't be limited to high-res textures then it's a valid release.

Not quite sure how a remastered release can be considered unnecessary. It hasn't been released on these consoles before and giving more people the chance to play the game is not what I'd call unnecessary. If people have already played the game then there's no need for them to repurchase the game again, is there? ;P

That being said, I never really liked Doom 3.

This isn't the only id Software title getting a re-release Quake 4 is as well in the following month

http://www.gamestop.com/xbox-360/games/quake-4/39214
Development of Quake 4 was only supervised by id Software, Raven Software were the actual developers of Quake 4. That is also the reason why some people don't consider Quake 4 to be a part of the series.

Yea, I too feel this is VERY unnecessary, and rather incomplete too.

The flashlight/gun toggle thing was a source of rage among people... and honestly, it makes sense. Even non-combat police officers know how to hold a flashlight and a pistol at the same time... why the hell can't a marine in the future do the same thing? Not to mention there's plenty of other ways to actually induce tension and fear in a game. But Doom's has always been a very cop-out way of doing it. Even back then, I felt like carmack was just phoning it in, while blissfully unaware that Chronicles of Riddick not only fixed his ass-tastic engine, but beat it to the punch in terms of release date.

And actually no, the Xbox nor PC versions originally did not have a checkpoint system. It was manual save only... the only "checkpoints" where those between levels... so in a way, there were no in-level checkpoints unless you made your own. Not that I disagreed with it, though. It forced you to think carefully of where and when to make your saves, so that was actually ONE good thing that Carmack did in the name of ensuring tension and a genuine fear of what you had to deal with.

Doom 64 didn't really have that much in terms of orgiinal levels, if I recall. Not to mention what turned me off Doom most up until 3 was the fact that you couldn't look up or down, and you couldn't jump... when Duke3D let you do these things, and you had some T&A to ogle in the levels. Forget the demons, I want me some babes! :grog:
