With all the discussion about the Wii U's power, I'm curious as to how powerful you guys would like the Wii U to be. Do you want it to be much more powerful than the PS3/360 or would you be okay if it was on-par? Or even a half-step above like the PS1->Dreamcast?

The current setup is perfectly fine, although I would probably add some more RAM so that it's a nice, round 1 gig simply because I have a round number fetish. :P

Other than that, "slightly more powerful than the PS3" is more than enough - the main issue with the current generation consoles is severe lack of memory rather than lack of computational power.

This next generation will not be a war just on hardware - it will the the continuation of what happened this generation. A war on hardware, features and services.

Consoles became more than just things you play your games on - they need to be full-blown and preferrably network-integrated media hubs. If the WiiU succeeds at that (for example, using the WiiU remote to choose songs in an internal music player while being in the other room sounds like a good feature) and perhaps includes certain cloud functionality or network functionality that will allow it to share content with computers, it's going to be a blast.

I honestly wouldn't mind if it was slightly more powerful than the Wii is.
If it's on par or surpasses 360/PS3, great! Looking pretty is always nice. Not necessary though.

They just need to make more quality games for it. I felt like last gen lacked a lot of that. They were too spread out and a lot of the greatest Wii games are recent releases.

Oh, because an avalanche of shovelware and zero third-party support made the Wii so great.

No. It has to be a contemporary design. The Wii was stuck in the last generation which resulted in a horrible roster of games other than some first/second-party ones and some selected third-parties.

I was talking about graphical power in the quoted text...
We're saying the same thing.

i would be happy with it being a little but more powerful than the ps3 and 360 about 30% more powerful to be exact
Then I think you'll be pretty satisfied. 400 (PS3 GPU) x .30 = 120. 520GFLOPS is easily attainable.

I honestly would not mine if it is on par with current gen, you will still get amazing graphics on games. Compared to Wii's wich is fun to play even without good graphics, but now add current gen graphics and you get a masterpiece.

I really don't care how powerful it is, just as long as they make more than just shovelware for it, I am happy.
Thing is, those things are closely connected. If you don't give developers enough resources, they won't spread their wings. If they can't do that, they'll release shovelware to make money and just get on with their lives.

Dreamcast is not a half-step over the PS1 - Dreamcast is comparable with the PS2, easily. It just didn't have enough time to show off its potential.

I would also like it to be a little more multimedia friendly, as in video from computer as well as netflix, hulu+, youtube etc..... Granted I do have other devices that will do this but it would be a nice addon.

Yep. It's connected to a (most likely) HD TV anyways, it might as well do something about it.

That's not totally true, power doesn't equal good games.
Looking at the Wii; even though it wasn't powerful, but it still had some really good games. Now some of Nintendo's fails did come from the fact that they never brought a lot great games out of Japan and then allowed morons like Ubisoft to put their shit on the Wii.
But again, power doesn't mean everything. The PS3 and 360 also had their fair share of shit games out there. The games looked great, but were still horrible.

To me, I still really don't care about the power behind the system, I just want enjoy video games.

Obviously generalizing is the wrong thing to do here but I do believe that if the system was stronger, it would recieve more attention - at least that's a safe assumption. It's drowning in its own shovelware and the diamonds among the coal are really hard to spot from a distance.

True, but more power at least puts your console on the multiplatform release list. See the current generation of consoles: any multiplat (he he, silly word) title is released for the PC, X360 and PS3, and the Wii gets a severely crippled version of the game, if it gets the title at all. Power isn't everything, but it doesn't hurt.

Most people think that if the Wii U doesn't have OMFG graphics, it will fail comparable to the next Playstation or Xbox, however, people need to understand that there can't be that much of an improvement, at most the PS3 and 360 will have comparable graphics to what our PC's (well, the good spec ones) are currently capable of, consoles are a step behind the consoles in graphical power and that's something that won't change any time soon. The WiiU needs to be powerful, I'll say 1.5 compared to the PS3 (the top console in terms of graphics atm), however still inferior to what our PC's "could" offer.
What I seriously hope that the WiiU will have is a good, free online service, maybe communities online and stuff like that, and make sure to always have a "Mute" button ready to use in online game modes, like CoD or similar.
