I'm tempted because 6.60 is supposed to be semi-permanent even for my 3000. But it seems if I update I will never be able to go back to 5.03.

Any advantages that I would lose, such as playing games unpatched?

No offense, but this is a stupid question. :P The 5.x firmwares haven't been updated in years, and often required addon patches (such as the Prometheus and KBHBBS plugins) to play 6.x games... and the makers of those patches stopped doing that and went ahead to help make the current 6.x firmwares.

The only feature you'll lose is 1.5-kernel homebrew compatibility, but that's not even considered important anymore, seeing as anything for 1.5 has something on 5.x or 6.x that does it better (as there's been 4-6 years of development since then).

On the othet hand, you'll gain lots. The ability to access PSN natively, the integration of some features you previously needed plugins to do (gameboot skipping for one), a new ISO driver with higher compatibility, native memory stick speedup, and more.

No, I don't think it is. I have never needed to patch a native game in order to run it. Every game has worked on day one thanks to 5.03 Prometheus.

I knew that all the homebrew I use works on it, as well as the plugins. And as far as I knew, any of that could be counted among lost compatibility.

Considering the fact that downgrade avenues are either impossible or carry a huge risk--making it a permanent change in most respects--I fail to see how asking this is stupid when the alternative was jumping blindly into something that I could regret. So tell me, is there anything else here you find stupid?

As I said, the guy who made Prometheus worked on PRO. The 6.x firmwares are a continuation of the 5.x plugins (a project to improve compatibility).
So you're asking if a later software by the same author with a later base OFW aimed at compatibility is a good move.
That's why I considered it a stupid question.

You can downgrade any PSP to a software it's already had or one between, so you'd be able to downgrade to 6.20 just fine.
The risk is with people trying to downgrade 3Ks to firmwares they never had (like a stock 6.60 machine downgrading to 6.20).
So this doesn't even apply to you.
That is, the force-downgrade risks you've probably heard about.

CIPL is the perm patch method for 6.60, which does not work on 3Ks. It uses the older method which only works on 1Ks and the older 2Ks.
The guide states that 6.20 is the permanent version because if the IPL on later 2Ks or 3Ks is modified, it will brick them permanently.

Fortunately, it appears that the current downgraders (at least the 6.60 downgrader I used) and cfw installers won't let you brick by downgrading too far or installing the cipl on an incompatible system. Still not something you should try just in case newer ones removed those checks.

Go to 6.20 pro b-10 with permanent patch (like Rydian said). You actually get to play more unpatched games. PSN might actually work on 6.20 idk since I run 6.60ME 1.8.
