Now before I get flamed for not reading the stickies I will say that I am aware that no flashcarts work in 3ds mode as of now, the question I have is, when (if) 3ds mode is achieved, will current flashcarts (specifically the dstwo which I just bought) out now be able to run in 3ds mode or will I probably have to buy another flashcart to play homebrew that takes advantage of the extra features such as 3d

Nope.

Layout of the DSTwo card is made for DS mode and not 3DS.
3DS carts differ from DS ones.

Besides.
Why update a DS card when you can make a new flashcard and make tonnes of money on it.

No. It's 99.9999999999999% likely currently flash carts will never run in 3DS mode. The ONLY way they could run in 3DS mode is by 1) knowing E-X-A-C-T-L-Y how the 3DS works inside and out and 2) breaking through an extreme sandbox. The chances are so slim you'd have a better chance living after falling 500 feet.
I say that as an exaggeration, though in hopes to stop n00bs from having hope that DS mode will run 3DS games.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm not exactly familiar with the innards of the 3ds but I did kind of expect as much. Oh well, lets see if I can hack this thing and get a loader going, if I just happen to find something I'll post a hello world for you all, but don't hold your breath :-)

DS and 3DS games are a completely different animal. You would have to buy a completely different flash cart. The differences between the two are just too extreme to even fathom that current cards could just get an update to play 3DS games.

This is comparable to ppl asking why a ds lite won't play 3ds games.
(And yes, they do ask lol)
In general on any system with backwards compatibility, being able to play homebrew or pirated games on the old format doesn't mean the new system itself is hacked. Personally, I think that people and even some cart makers claiming a cart is for 3ds can be confusing.
NO cart is FOR 3ds, it just works on 3ds in ds mode.
Just like hacking the psp side of the vita has been shown off, that doesn't mean ppl are using that to play vita games.
The 3ds cartridge, to put it simply, is like a more advanced storage device.
You can't use old tech/"hack" hardware to hack the new device. At least in this case.

Just to make things clear I wasn't expecting a "yes it's possible" answer, I was expecting no, I just hadn't gone through the differences between the systems. I just wasn't sure about how extreme the differences between the consoles was considering nintendo has done rebrands of older hardware before but after loading up the 3ds for the first time I said "yeah, there's no way in hell" a flash cart built for the older architecture is going to cut it unless it was built for such a thing in the first place. I guess I'm with the rest of you guys holding onto a few bucks while we wait for the /cough "crown 3ds flashcart" /cough cough

I'm in the process of putting the device back together after tearing it apart (yes I took apart the 3ds mere hours after I bought it, I do this to just about every gadget I buy) and now know that this was a true successor to the DS line and not a simple rebrand

There's so much fail in this thread, even from people you normally see talking sense.

Nope.

3DS carts differ from DS ones.
Wrong. The physical interface of 3DS carts is exactly the same as those for the DS, with the exception of the tab that stops them being inserted into a DS or DSi. Only the communication protocol and the clock frequency differs.

Also wrong. If an exploit were found in the 3DS's card interface it may be possible to flash the card to take advantage of that exploit. Given the SCDS2's additional CPU to help it jump through any necessary hoops, it makes it likely that it would be just as much up to the task as any card released specifically for the 3DS.

This is comparable to ppl asking why a ds lite won't play 3ds games.
No, it isn't at all. It's ridiculous to think that an outdated console could play games designed for its successor, but it's perfectly understandable to consider that a card like the DSTwo with an upgradable bootloader might be able to have its interface updated to accommodate newer hardware. If original DS cards had flashable bootloaders, it would have been possible to make them work with the DSi without forcing people to buy new cards, and that would be a more apt comparison.

All that being said, I agree that a flashcard team would probably rather release a new card, forcing current owners to purchase the hardware all over again. On the other hand, given that the 3DS's firmware is upgradable, it's almost certain that any cards will be rendered useless shortly after release, so perhaps it would make more sense to release it as an update to current cards rather than investing a lot of money only to have sales killed by a firmware update.

Physically their the same yes.
But you can't even boot a bare 3DS card PCB in a DS so they still differ.

Chances of that are SUPER SUPER slim.

You have a higher chance of winning the jackpot then hacking the 3DS yourself.
Don't shoot people down like that, the more people we have trying whether they succeed or not makes it more likely of us seeing a huge 3DS homebrew scene.

Also, it is possible for DSTwo to do so, but very unlikely as it would be easier to release a new card.

I wasn't.
Kind of.....

Anywhoo, He asked if a DS flashcard could run in 3DS mode.

Someone with a bit more knowledge would know that that isn't possible, besides flashcard companies would rather make more profit then update a old product.

I really don't have high hopes for this fella to hack a 3DS, but I never said that he wouldn't.

Because the protocol is different, as I said. This is something that could be changed with a different firmware for the DSTwo. Of course they differ, but not in a way that matters.

Given the implications of the dstwo and the claims made about it by even the team itself, I would asses that this is still a fair question. Now if you want to stay on your high horse, then you can stay out of my threads.
