There have been a few of these in years past (Orange Blue Contrast in film posts/titles probably being the most notable), but over recent months games the "chrome in the desert" effect (GIMP calls is horizon and it is one of the stock effects there) for games title screens have caught my eye. This post is what tipped me over the edge here, although I first remember really noticing it when I grabbed a bunch of CD drives from a bucket at a computer faire and to my surprise one came with a then fairly recent version of corel draw which had it as a default brush/effect and as such this idea had been building for a while. There have been plenty that use gradients and why not as it is a good effect but I always seem to notice this one (although that is not to say other default gradients are not abused a lot), I am going to try to limit it to the stock version or a very obvious tweak thereof (keeping with the same colours mainly- plenty changed one colour but used exactly the same technique) but no promises.

I must acknowledge a a nice video that helped me out with some extras of these for the NES http://www.joystiq.c...n-five-minutes/

So to that end

Megaman gets an honourable mention for tending to separate the colours into the title and number.

james pond 2 gets a second honourable mention for playing with the effect

(about 1:14)

Doom II also features but they get bonus points for mixing it up slightly.

Pushing the limit a tad but I wanted another from the NES.

Pushing it again

I wanted another nes one

Was the title screen as well.

I know I tried not to do different colours but Nintendo were not about to get off lightly

There is only one classic skateboarding avoiding and using the cars game and that was street surfer

I am justifying it by it having an early example of the blue orange theme.

Also I realised I never stuck a megaman game up

Having trouble finding PS1 and later examples other than franchises that already existed (plenty of quick and easy uses of gradients but not this exact effect) so in the meantime.

it does imo. any more retro, and people would be bitching that Nintendo is trying to be in past too much. so its a modern take on it.

It looks cool, that's the only reason. :P

nay, there must be some kind of back story, like an hidden message that game publishers\developers believed the brain would understand
or maybe because it was just cheap and\or fast to do

Orange and blue are opposite each other on the colour wheel ( http://paletton.com/#uid=1000u0kllllaFw0g0qFqFg0w0aF ), opposite colours tend to work well together and thus we have that combo. If you have a nice gradient between them then even better. In most image editing tools such a gradient is common; GIMP has one, photoshop has one, as mentioned in the OP I saw it in a really old version of corel draw* I scored (then probably the main image editing tool, or at least one that everybody had heard of if they moved in those circles) as the stock gradient effect and the list goes on. As Foxi4 mentioned it does look cool.

*it was new/current when 16 bit games were still being developed/released.
