We'll Probably See Some New Nintendo Characters Soon

Shigeru Miyamoto — creator of Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and more, of course — has dropped a seriously big hint we'll see new characters from Nintendo very soon.
The Guardian asked Miyamoto if there was a particular game or style he wanted to work on, to which he replied:

I don't have a big list of ideas I want to realise, I usually come up with new ideas while I am working on other games. That said, there's a strong possibility we will introduce some new characters to the scene soon.


We haven't seen many brand new Nintendo characters in recent years, but with Miyamoto focused on new franchises it probably won't be too long until we see a set of fresh faces.

That makes me wonder.... Hmm. I think this is the start of a new era! But will those new characters be as good as the usual old ones? We shall wait and see.

Hmmm I never thought of it that way, you got a point there, but I think by new characters he meant First Party games that will stay around like Link, Mario, etc. That's just a theory so I might be totally wrong.

I think he means memorable characters, Xenoblade...well fantastic game but I can't even remember the characters names and they're hardly anything different from other JRPG characters, S&P2...really the kids? They're just generic kids.

There's been are characters not by Miyamoto that are considered Nintendo characters such as Samus, Pit, Kirby & Ness.

Yeah they've done some new IP's very recently but not many with memorable franchise starting characters.

To be honest though, there's not many new big new characters in the gaming world today by anyone that aren't your standard video game character fodder.

I can think of Angry Birds which is now a brand, probably the biggest & best known new one of this gen (though I find the games to be "meh") & Sackboy.

People write those games off as e-shop trash, but it's partially Nintendo's fault for lack of advertising that would help establish new characters in the Nintendo lexicon

What Miyamoto also mentioned was the importance of keeping their other franchises alive.
Here's the quote:
"We need to continue releasing new games in existing franchises otherwise those franchises might die"

This is something that could hint at future F-Zero or Starfox titles, not only that but I would also like to believe in the possibility of a franchise revival like what Uprising was to Kid Icarus, is StarTropics 3 in the pipeline? Fans seem to like the idea at least.

My hopes for the new characters to be awesome is very low, still thats just my personal bias since I prefer female characters over male characters.

When Miyamoto gets cranking, the results are always, at the very least, interesting. If he's got something new up his sleeve, I'll be more than happy to see what it is.
