I bought Xenoblade when it came out in the US yesterday, but when I went to go play it, the disc channel couldn't read it for some reason. I tried using NeoGamma to load it, and it eventually worked, but I had to try it a few times before it would load without an error message.

My System Menu is still on version 3.2U, and I have Starfall set up to skip disc updates. Xenoblade not loading is very odd, because I've never had a problem with any games in the past, not even other Dual-Layered games. Since a friend of mine has a 4.3U Wii, and his game works, I would assume that I'm missing an IOS or two that Xenoblade needs to run. I would post a syscheck, but for some reason it crashes every time I try to run it. Can anyone help me get this game working from the disc channel?

By this point, there's really no reason for you to still even be on 3.2, and I'd wager it has to do with IOS compatibility, yes. I suggest doing a proper softmod update with Modmii.

If you launch it through GeckoOS, it should install the ios it uses automatically from the disc and from then on it should launch fine from the disc channel.

I'd also recommend updating to 4.1/Update all your softmods with modmii aswell, it isn't necessary to play this game, but it doesn't hurt to be up to date!

I tried Gecko OS first, actually, and it was as if there was no disc in the drive at all. After that I downloaded NeoGamma.

I downloaded ModMii and I'm not sure what to do next, since my Wii is already softmodded. The program is currently on the "Choose and activity" screen. I have the following options:

ModMii Wizard +Guide (Start Here to Mod Your Wii!)
Abstinence Wizard +Guide (Use Casper without mod)
USB-Loader Setup +Guide
HackMii Solutions +Guide
Region Change +Guide
Load Download Queue
SNEEK Installation and NAND Builder
Options
Credits
ModMii Classic Mode for more activities

Which one should I choose? Or are you two telling me to do an official update first?

Xenoblade does happen to be a dual layer game, which may be part of the disc reading error.

It's also a bad idea to be stuck on 3.2, it's pretty safe to update to the latest 4.3 and reinstall anything that got uninstalled. Current HBC wouldn't get uninstalled.
I'm not totally sure though since I don't softmod my Wii THAT heavily, mostly just what's necessary to get USB loader GX to work.

Just choose the ModMii Wizard. It'll guide your through basically "rehacking" your Wii while updating all of the IOSes, cIOSes, and your system menu to either 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 of your choosing. It's gonna also ask you a method to used in order to activate a certain hack; you can ignore this, as in the end, all you're really going to do is copy the apps and "wad" folder.

While it is safe for the most part, updating officially tends to make it a little more difficult to reinstall mods, with the stubs and all that.

First one, act as if it the first time you was modding your wii, never do official updates.

*EDIT*
As a side note, since you mentioned you use starfall, if you update to 4.X, DONT reinstall starfall, either use starpatch or priiloader.

There is no reason to run an official update to 4.3. Just run the ModMii Wizard, answer the prompts, and install/update the recommended IOS files and system menu (4.1). It should also be noted that updating your system menu to anything will erase Starfall/StartPatch/whatever, so make sure you use ModMii to install Priiloader and block disc and online updates.

Edit: Although recommended, updating your system menu to 4.1 is not necessary for getting your games to work. All that matters are the IOS files (retail discs and disc backups+modchip) and cIOS files (disc and USB backups using a loader).

Yeah, you guys definitely know better than I do.
Though I had heard that maybe updating the Wii firmware any way other than the official method is a bad idea.

Alright, ModMii is downloading everything right now, so I'll let everyone know if this worked. Thanks for the help!

It's only the 'waninkoko safe updaters' that are now unsafe, using modmii there is almost zero risk.

Following the guides generated by ModMii is as safe (arguably safer) than updating the official way. Doing official updates also potentially causes you to lose your cIOS files, Homebrew Channel, etc. Doing an official update from 3.2U also means that boot2 will be messed with by the official update, and I've read that it has caused a few bricked systems.

Doing an official update is also redundant because the best way to re-hack your Wii after doing an official update would be to use ModMii on it anyway. The only real danger is if you power off your Wii while it is installing something important like the system menu, system menu IOS, etc., and that same danger exists with an official Nintendo update anyway.

That's because between the 4.x system menus, the core IOS used by the system menu changes, and the one used previously become a stub. As a result, back when they were released, people who directly installed them without updating officially (which would install IOS XX used by that system menu) would end up with a brick. The three IOSes used by 4.x are IOS 60, 70, and 80, which Modmii installs all of to make sure no bricking occurs if someone were to switch between the 4.x system menus for whatever reason.

Older system menus also relied on IOS 36, and maybe others, but I'm not too sure.

Well, this is just wonderful... I'm finished with ModMii, followed the guide, and my Wii is running just fine. But Xenoblade still can't be launched from the Disc Channel. What's the deal here?

Here are the options I chose in ModMii:
This guide was generated using the following parameters:
Current System Menu is 3.XU
Desired System Menu is 4.1U
Install Photo Channel
Install Internet Channel
Install Weather Channel
Install News Channel
Install Mii Channel
Install Shopping Channel (and IOS56)
Install andor update the Homebrew Channel and BootMii
Install recommended cIOSs
Download Yet Another Wad Manager Mod (YAWMM)
Install IOS236
Install andor update Priiloader
Update active IOSs (can be disabled in options)
Do not Install a cMIOS (can be enabled in options)
Install a USB-Loader Forwarder Channel (can be disabled in options)
External Hard Drive already Formatted as Part FAT32 and Part WBFS
Download Configurable USB-Loader
USB-Loader Settings and config files saved to SD Card

And here is the full list of IOSes and etc. it told me to install:
Your unique list of WADs to install are as follows:
IOS11v16174(IOS60v6174[FS-ES-NP-VP-DIP])
IOS20v16174(IOS60v6174[FS-ES-NP-VP-DIP])

Well... Now what?

EDIT: Wait, I restarted and now it works. Huh, wonder what happened. Anyway, thanks for all the help everyone! I hope anyone else having problems with Xenoblade finds this.

EDIT2: On second thought... The game works, but it won't load when I have an SD card inserted... It's not a critical problem, but to say the least very annoying, because I like to leave the SD card in there all the time. So, any ideas as to why Xenoblade doesn't like the SD card?

Bootmii and Priiloader installed just fine, plus I managed to backup the NAND without a hitch. Granted, I should have stayed at 4.1, but it will be a cold day in hell before I downgrade the firmware, as that increases the likelihood of bricking it.
