Mass Effect 3 sold nearly 900,000 copies in the US in its first 24 hours on sale, EA has revealed.

To be exact, 890,000, EA boss John Riccitiello told an audience at the Wedbush Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference, attended by VentureBeat.

"We anticipated it doing well, so we're happy," he said.

Mass Effect 3, from BioWare, launched in the US on Tuesday. It launched in Europe today.

US giant GameStop saw 40 per cent of day one customers also buy a download code for the day one DLC From Ashes. "The tie ratio at the register is the highest in their history," Riccitiello said.

Meanwhile, the EA chief confirmed BioWare MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic has 1.7 million active subscribers. This is the same amount EA reported earlier this year, but, as Riccitiello pointed out, then, players were still in the first 30 days of the subscription period, included with copies of the game.

Riccitiello said The Old Republic is "the most successful MMO through this period in the history of the industry. But we're nowhere relative to what the opportunity in front of us is".

He promised new content every quarter, systems, tutorials, feature upgrades and expansion content. EA "tailored the game for the core user, people who were existing MMO players," he said. "What we do from here … [are] things designed to increase the funnel at the top.

"That means content changes, feature changes, new ways to bring the product to market … so new users can find entry into the game a lot easier."

Little more content when you reply, guys.

Yeah, this sounds about right. Mass Effect 3 is literally the first Xbox 360 game I've bought new, the first midnight release I've ever attended, and even in my little town there were easily 75 people waiting in line. A cop rolled by at 11:58 wondering why so many people were gathered in one place in a town that usually pretty much "rolls up the sidewalks" after sundown. I very nearly answered his question "We're waiting on some guy to come by and sell us some pot!" But at that moment the line began to shuffle into the store.

900,000 x 60 (ignoring all the DLC and collector's edition sales)
That's $54,000,000

I concur. Damn.

Not that surprising considering ME's popularity. That's a crazy number even still.

Though honestly

US giant GameStop saw 40 per cent of day one customers also buy a download code for the day one DLC From Ashes

Shit like THAT pisses me off. Instead of protesting content unlocks that are ALREADY ON THE DISK...people bought it en masse. This is why devs/publishers are capable of getting away with day one DLC. This would NEVER have gone well back when PC was the only thing with DLC. PC gamers would fucking LAUGH at devs and send bags of dog shit to them in the mail for trying such a tactic.
Paying for DLC is fine, but day one DLC is complete bullshit when you just paid full price for a game, and it would never happen if people stopped being submissive bitches willing to throw money away.

For me It's like the new UFC game. Played the demo and was going to buy It even preorder. I missed out on the pre order so I lost the extra content pack that you could only get from pre-ordering. On top of that I find out they are acting like MW3 with the download content and subscription BS. At this point I'm just like nevermind, I guess I don't need this game afterall. I have made a pact with myself to never buy any game that has special perks for pre order only or subscription that you can't buy seperate and "pick and choose". The future for gaming just keeps lQQking worse for the consumer, It's like being forced to buy a large box of expensive chocolates when you only want the two caramel ones that are inside.

That was a different file I downloaded after I downloaded the game, if it was on the disc, it would be much, much, much smaller in file size.

The same is said with the Xbox 360 version

Let me rephrase that, then.

Most of the DLC content was on the disc.

All that proves is that the game had some voice files and models, but not a completed version of the DLC, therefor the DLC was finished after the game went gold.

If you bend over any farther for Bioware you'll be able to see them as they take you for all you're worth, prison style.
But hell if you enjoy paying extra for content you're entitled to with the initial purchase, be my guest.

However, it has now come to light that some of the files from this particular DLC (listed as From Ashes) can be found within the data on the main game's disc. As an avid file-investigator over at Crystal Palace Zone points out, "the build which leaked in November, the official demo, and now the standard retail release of Mass Effect 3all contain voice files for the [From Ashes] squad member. There's also a full set of model and animation files for the [character], but file encryption makes it impossible to open these for further inspection."
He continues, "These files are just as big as they are for other, non-DLC characters, suggesting that the art, animation, and voice assets for the DLC character were developed at the same time, not after the completion of the project. If these assets were developed after end of development, they would have to be downloaded - not unlocked directly from the disc."
If by some voice files and models you mean entire sets of animations, art, and voice files. Sure, the DLC was finished after the game was but most of the DLC content was still on the disc.

I'm not entitled to anything, You have no idea what hard work goes into making video games, If companies want to charge for extra content, then they can do whatever they want.

But bitching about it on the internet just makes you seem like you're calling for attention, Games used to cost 80+ dollars back in the day, and had about 4 hours worth of gameplay, And people didn't bitch about that.

I bet this is chump change to EA, seriously though what the hell, it seems like every few months we have a game like this that just sales like crazy despite all the whiners on Metacritic.
