In an interview with the Eurogamer website, David Cage and Quantic Dream have revealed their latest underaking designed to support their next Playstation 3 game. As a tech demo in the vein of the company's The Casting (a precursor to Heavy Rain), "Kara" shows off the developer's latest engine and motion-capturing techniques.

"There were many things that we couldn't do on the old engine, so we decided to build a new one from scratch," said Cage regarding the project.

Cage goes on to describe the need for the company to construct an entirely new motion-capture studio that puts their latest capturing techniques on par with the likes of James Cameron's Avatar and Tintin.

"Heavy Rain was shot with 28 cameras, and we've upgraded the studio to 65 cameras. Now we can shoot several actors - their body and their face - at the same time," said Cage.

The Kara tech demo was made about a year ago according to Cage, and he offers no specific information about their future project other than saying, "It's for people expecting something else from gaming than just fun and adrenaline."

So they are essentially showing off the increased number of cameras they can use in a scene. With the Audio on, this is a very good piece of storytelling. Turn the Audio off though, you have no clue what she could be saying.

My point is this; if you want to sell story in your games, let's get some heavy work done on facial rigging.

I liked Heavy Rain quite a bit and the story was quite intense (even made me stand up while playing the ending scenes. First time for everything I guess?). Hopefully they'll make another masterpiece like that :)

Reminds me a little of "I Robot". Which isn't really a bad thing. Even though this is a prototype it's beautiful. Hope they actually create a story out of this. It really makes me want to see more about this one robot. Hope they start using more of this new engine in other games too.

No idea what kinda gameplay a game like that would have but I know I want to play it..

(I was kinda hoping when he put her back together he'd just say "run")

LOL So basically they're trying to fuse the experience of watching movies and the experience of playing video games into one?
Heavy Rain ring a bell? :P

I watched a full walkthrough on YouTube and played the game myself for 30 mins. It scared the shit of out me. Every single second was tense. It was unbearable.

Quantum, I'll be honest with you. I really like what you're doing - you always take your time with games, you have a slow pace, you rarely make releases. Each game you developed has always been a revolution in this way or another... I've been with you since The Nomad Soul which has been dear to my heart ever since I've read about it for the first time and all I've read turned out to be true. We fell out when you released Heavy Rain for the PS3 only - I thought to myself... why? I wasn't allowed to enjoy your new game and since it wasn't exactly the stylistic I usually enjoy, I didn't get a PS3 "just for it"... and now there's Kara - a tech-demo that somehow "feels" like The Nomad Soul. Make a full game out of it, seriously. If you do that, the moment I get enough money, I will open the front door, grab a tram, go straight to the mall and grab myself a f*cking PS3 in anticipation. Sure, I have access to a PS3 from time to time, but with a game like this, I'd have to move in with my bro in-law and annex his couch for circa one month before I get my fix. Make it quick, I'm impatient - I want to see more of this stuff.

Of course if you turn the audio off there is no way to tell what Kara is saying. You can definitely imagine what she is saying from her facial expressions though which is one of the primary purposes of this Tech demo; to showcase the much improved facial animation capabilities...

Thing is Heavy Rain was all about the story, not the technology. I don't care if they have 64, 48, 2, or 0 cameras and do everything with PS2 level polygons, it still would've been the same cool game. Frankly they're getting into uncanny valley territory and that's vaguely disturbing.

And Heavy Rain didn't veer headlong into the uncanny valley? If anything, I'd say they're beginning to climb out of those depths.

And Heavy Rain was as much about the technology as it was the story. Quantic Dream is heavily focused (sometimes detrimentally) on using the most advanced technology to emulate the film medium.
