I have a soft-modded Wii, and when I try to go into the Wii System Settings to get to internet connections settings, etc., I get a black screen. The music continues to play though, and the only way to get out of it is to reset the system.

I performed the mod about a year ago, and I don't remember the specifics of exact methods and programs I used. I can access everything else, including the Homebrew Channel, different apps, I can still play my backups from external HDD, but I can't access the system options from the main Wii system page.

I have two different customs themes that I have put on my Wii in the past (one with a pirate logo and one named DarkWii or something to that effect), and I feel that those may be the problem. I tried switching between the two and going into the options, but it doesn't work on either theme. I haven't really checked, but maybe I can't access the Wii Options ever since I have installed those themes, so maybe they are the problem.

What do you guys think? How can I fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

reinstall the system menu. You can download it via ModMii. If you are unsure of what your current system menu version is then you can find it out many homebrew apps and also through bootmii's info page.

If you want to make things easier for yourself then just run ModMii's Wizard and completely resoftmod your wii, and then everything will be up to date.

Well, I tried to load up BootMii, and I get a black screen of death again with the blue drive light flashing. What other apps could I try to use to figure out my firmware version? And what could I do if I can't figure out which version I have?

turn off any preloader hacks you have booting the system menu with the wrong ios. and dont call it a blackscreen of death. its a blackscreen of user-error.

Sorry for the terminology. And how would I go about turning off preloader hacks? And how would I know which ones to turn off? (I think my noob status is showing.)

Setting in the Homebrew Channel? I checked and didn't see any options for that there, so I must be in the wrong place...

Alright, Use System Menu IOS is already set to on. What's next?

And just to make sure, Lock System Menu with Black Screen is also disabled. And on the Priiloader menu, it says Systemmenu v54449, if that tells you anything.

I think that might mean you had hacked your wii using mauifrogs guide.

Just do a full rehack with modmii.
No point in rehacking, his setup is perfect with mauifrog's guide. He must have region changed it and not followed the directions. I'd suggest following it again (but correctly) so he doesn't lose the custom System Menu, which ModMii still doesn't offer.

the point of a full rehack is because the last time he did the softmod was about a year ago so he should probably update his cIOS's and his loaders and whatever else.... unless you find it easier to give him the directions of everything to do for what only needs to be updated.

I meant rehacking with ModMii. ModMii doesn't offer a custom System Menu, and you have to do region changing separate.

What do you mean about a region change? I'm pretty sure I haven't messed with anything region related, and I always use the NTSC items, not the PAL ones. Unless I did something by accident, which is possible but unlikely. What should be my next step?

So how would I go about using ModMii to re-hack without knowing firmware version?

Also, I still have copies of that nand.bin and key.bin from when I performed the mod in the first place. Could I use these files to restore default settings or anything?

It looks like I did use mauifrog's guide on WiiHacks.

It offers a patched System menu ios though, standard.

Just tell it that your firmware is "3.x" and that your wii is a virgin. Then just skip the part about running the exploit and just do everything straight from HBC, but still make a nand backup.

I think Joostin meant was a SM that has a high version number so it can't get overwritten by a normal official update.

Well, I won't be able to make a nand backup because I can't access BootMii (as previously stated). Just skip this step then?

I'm thinking I should just go through all of the steps.
