Sony has announced that PlayStation Network accounts will become known as Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) accounts.

The rebranding has been implemented to create a "comprehensive network platform" of services across games, movies, music and other media.

"This transition is based on Sony's goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with Sony Entertainment Network," read an email from Sony to its subscribers.

"This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account."

Besides minor terms of service alterations, the change is in name only. Subscribers' username and password details will not change.

Sony says that the rebranding will be introduced with the next PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita software updates on February 8. The change will not be applied to PlayStation Portable for the time being.

aww but I liked PSN, SEN just sounds weird.
This might be hinting towards the PS4 not have Playstation in it's name.

doubtful. Playstation is too big of a brand to ever consider changing the name... Especially after 3 consoles and 2 handhelds all used it.

I was SO tempted of using that "WARN" button. Enough Valwin talk. It isn't funny anymore. Actually, it never was.

If you really want to do it, create a thread in the EoF or something. Seeing every Sony thread turn into a pro/anti-Valwin-fest is getting really really annoying.

@Bladexsl Sorry pal, didn't want to delete your post, my finger slipped on the "Delete" button :(

EDIT: Also had to remove the joke in the OP just because I don't want to see this thread derailed anymore than it already was.
Stay classy, GBAtemp.

Thanks! :yay:

Well the name change must have some reason to it.
It's an odd thing to do to just change a network's name, without making a new system or something first.
Maybe PSN makes everyone think of the PSN hack incident and they thought a rename would fix the negativity?

How popular was the Gameboy brand when Nintendo rebranded it's handheld range as 'DS'?

It could also be just because they want to have everything interconnected. Like prowler_'s post says, everything is about entertainment with Sony, maybe some new feature will be coming up that interconnects different Sony products?

That wasn't necessarily a rebrand, it was a new product that stepped away from the design of the (early) Gameboy series.

In fact, it's a trend found in most consoles so far. Although, seeing as Nintendo has released the most consoles/handhelds I'm sure the trend continues on with other companies as well...
NES->SNES
N64
GB->GBC->GBA->GBA SP-> GBM
GC
DS->DSl->DSi->DSiXL->3DS (Although the 3DS is supposed to be a seperate console, it has the same looks and name as the DS series)
Wii

PS1->PS2->PS3
PSP->PSV

Xbox->Xbox360

Who knows what Sony have lined up for future consoles?

well the gameboy/gba only had 1 screen :P
Would the name 'Gameboy DS' really have stretched credibility?

I'm not suggesting that Sony really are going to drop the Playstation name, only that I consider the Gameboy/DS thing to be a precedent.

We'll never know, but seeing as the Playstation brand itself has been successful for almost 20 years that also might have an effect on whether or not Sony will change their name. But, we'll never know until it happens! :P

Nintendo never intended for the DS to be the GBA successor, but it ended up being such a success that the DS became their main handheld focus, at least so I've heard.

Anyway Sony rebranding the PSN as SEN may be them trying to disassociate with the infamous PSN hacking incident.

Everyone's welcome in the Valwinator thread, where we have a cake party everyday, all the time.

ONTOPIC: I think this is a fantastic move - this way, Sony cuts off even more from their PSN fiasco and soon enough people will forget it ever happened. Moreover, it's an opportunity to unify services on numerous platforms into one big "Sony" service - sort of what Windows Live was supposed to be but fails miserably at it.

I hope Microsoft will follow suit and just kill off the Xbox Live brand in favour of just "Live" and nicely interlink the service with other of their ventures... and I hope Hotmail will finally start being a "good" e-mail service as it begins to annoy me. >>
