Not sure this is the correct board I'm posting on.
Please move this thread if I'm making an ass of myself.

Right, so...

I used to play around with my Wii and do all sorts of crazy shit with it (sounds dirty), but that was a few years back and now I can't remember anything!
It's already softmodded, but with what I don't know/remember, not sure how to check either. (if that's even important)
All the games I have (about 300~) runs perfectly fine, so that's not an issue.
Infact everything runs pretty damn well as it is!
But I'd still like to update my Wii from 3.x to 4.3(? that's the newest, right?)
Just to sorta be up to date I guess, heh.

So a few question:

*Should I update first of all?
I have noticed my Wii motes sometimes don't turn themselves off after a while, and I have another Wii that's running 4.2 I believe, and those motes do shut off correctly.
Not sure the newer version fixes that, but that's a difference between my two Wii's that I have noticed.
Probably other reasons to update too, right?

*How would I go about updating?
I don't know what software to use for updating, is there an automatic app for this perhaps, or do I have to basically factory reset everything first and work from there?

*What else needs an update?
As I said, I don't know what the hell is on this Wii, there's probably a few security apps I should install by now, or update?

I'll provide any information you ask for regarding the Wii, just include instructions on how to find the data first. ;)
Thanks for any help.

If i were you, it would be a tough decision, updating can get you access to new apps, but while updating, it will make some apps uncompatible, also, with the current exploits out, you dont need ssbb, or any other game, and can use letterbomb ( 4.3 only ) Also, most people say not to update with nintendo, I say go ahead, i've never had any problems with it.

use modmii from here: http://gbatemp.net/topic/207126-modmii-for-windows/
it will get you up to date . i would recommend no higher than 4.1 ,, Everyone says 4.1 is the best to stay on ,, not 4.3

Ok so let me see if I got this right...
There's almost no point in me upgrading to 4.1 from 3.x?

99% of the time I spend on the Wii is in USB Loader GX, so if the changes are only visible outside USB Loader GX, then there's no point at all for me.
Or are the changes noticeable everywhere?
And what exactly's new to these updates?

And one more thing I'd like to ask.
I'm using a 2TB external HDD formated to WBFS, it's working great.
But I am noticing low transfer speeds, it starts out at like 70mb/sec then after a few minutes, it goes down to 13-14mb/sec while transferring games using Wii Backup Manager x64.
Is this caused by WBFS?
It was of my understanding that WBFS would be faster than both Fat32 and NTFS as it's optimized for the Wii.

Most likely the problem is USB.
WBFS is not optimised for the wii, it was only easier to implement compared to a real filesystem.

How is this a USB problem?
Normally I get much higher speeds transferring to USB drives.
Not neccessarily a problem with the USB chip in your PC.
The ones in the enclosures are not really known for their blazing speed too.

Use some tool to test the speed without using the fs to verify my claim.
I would suggest "dd" but you seem to use windows. So google will have to suffice.

Or simply switch to fat32 and see if the speed gets better.
Imho its better in any case. (most importantly flexibility, ease of use and data security)

Updating sysmenu only affects sysmenu.
Afaik the only interesting thing you get is the sysmenu SD card support (which is crap imho).
Otoh there are not major drawbacks either.

Regardless of sysmenu you might want to update your IOS' if you run games from disc channel.
Ninty updates bundle these two but homebrew (eg modmii) can update then independently.

That slowdown is due to your pc running out of free memory to use as disk cache and having to actually write data out rather than just buffering it. It's nothing to do with the filesystem and 13-14mb/s is fairly normal for an external USB2 drive.

Personally, I don't see much point in sticking with WBFS, especially if you have a 2TB drive. I have a 1TB "slim" drive formatted to FAT32 that has all my PS3 and Wii games on it, and the Wii part only takes up around 300GB of the space. My secondary HDD (1.5TB, used for storing movies, Xbox360 and other random large files) is formatted in NTFS. Both work just fine with Wii games (you just put them in a "wbfs" folder).

ModMii is the easiest method to upgrade/softmod/resoftmod a Wii, as it has a step by step guide for everything, including letting you pick whichever version you want to update to. It even prepares all the files for you so you can just stick it on a SD card and let it do it's thing.

I can EXACTLY say the same thing now....my Wii is modded but I haven't used it in a while....might play Skyward Sword or something...maybe some older games...

my IOS is most likely HEAVILLY outdated, so as of now, what is the best and Firmware, newest iOS, and rev to be on for the best compatibility?

I just transferred a game at 60mb/sec the entire transfer.
That's what confuses me, sometimes I get really good speeds and sometimes it just drops down to 13mb/sec per transfer.
Had it been 13mb/sec constantly, I'd be like "Oh it's slow, guess that's how it's supposed to be" but when it sometimes goes at 60-70mb/sec, it get really frustrated, heh. x)

Thanks for all the help, I'll grab modmii and have a go at that.
Is there any chance I'll F everything up in the process and render my Wii useless? (bricked)
I still have a Wii in the closet that does nothing but display a black screen at startup, and I have no idea what I've done wrong on it... But I'm guessing it's bricked.

Because some games are smaller than others and can fit entirely in the cache or your PC might have more free memory at the time.
Getting a sustained rate of 60mb/s on any USB2 drive is physically impossible.

Glad to see I'm not the only one confused by this. x)
I'm afraid I'll F something up, leaving the Wii bricked and useless.

Lol my firmware is pretty old and I recently played skyword sword :P

Everything works my end, that's not the issue.
I have over 300 games (including Skyword Sword) and they all works just fine.
I just want to update to stay in par with what's new, make my Wii run better, get new features or keep it brick free.
