Sony's profit is almost 50% with each unit sold

PS Vita teardown reveals that its real value is less than $160

Intrigued by PS Vita "high-end" parts cost? Are you sure you want to know with how much of your cash is Sony filling their wallets with each unit sold?

Well, the final percentage is that the PS Vita real value is 50% of its retail price. Yeah, it hurts to know but this is only about 150-160$ for the parts it has.

A recent teardown of the machine, part by part give us the following price list:

Touchscreen: $50
Battery: $3.60
Cameras: $3.50
Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/GPS: $3.50
NAND chip: $6.00
SDRAM: $9.25
Processor: $16.00
BB+XCR: $16.25
Non-electronic components: $11.00
Other: $30.00
Supporting materials: $10.00

But hey, this is only the "hardware" part, engineering is not included ;).

Mod edit- tweaked the title a bit from "PS Vita worths less than $160"

This basically means that the 3DS is about $90 worth according to your logic.

As said in the quote itself - you have to add R&D, testing, distribution, the machines necessary to solder the units, the molds, tons upon tons of wages for the workers, programmers etc. etc. NO, it is NOT worth $160.

I'm pretty sure he said that in a round about way, look below, it was just a tear down of the hardware

But hey, this is only the "hardware" part, engineering is not included

That's a quote from the source site, not his words. He said "The real value of the Vita is $160 bucks" and it is not.

I posted this info in a link yesterday in the sh*tstorm topic but for ease of reference -

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-20-is-the-playstation-vita-worth-230

So that's $160 for the Vita and $101 for the 3DS. $90 wasn't a bad guess.

Please show me another portable with similar specs, the same connectivity methods, including b/g/n Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G and a lower pricetag. Then we'll talk.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a drop of £20-30 GBP in the coming months. Nothing like the price drop we've seen on the 3DS however purely because the console production costs would be higher.

It's not overpriced, it's priced accordingly to its specs. iPhones are overpriced, the 3DS at launch was overpriced - the Vita is priced perfectly fine.

The memory card is indeed overpriced - I never said it is not. What I said is that the unit itself is priced just fine.

I won't argue with the fact that an SD/MSPDuo derrivative is given the price of golden tears of dragons.

$160 sounds about right for the production cost.(They have included $30 as "other" that must be for wages, transportation, R&D etc.)

I think a price collapse to $199.99 is inevitable. It's what the current sentiment or the lack of demand for Vita suggests. Sony should consider it and consider it soon. :)

"Other" means PCB's, soldering equipment, misc. parts etc.

The quote states clearly that engineering is not included, and the prices only reffer to the actual price of each part after a teardown, so distribution isn't there either.

Ah! I see... I say $20 should be more than enough for a rough estimate of that cost. $180 for the Vita. They will still earn $20 from each unit which is fair, considering they are fucking with the consumers with ridiculously expensive proprietary memory cards, and those are a MUST to even launch a game. :)

You really underestimate the costs of several years of development, testing and later distribution world-wide. They would not earn $20 - they would lose money. I'm pretty sure they're stretching it as it is at the moment.

First they have to make up for Dev costs, then they'll drop the price a bit.

Sony fanboy much?

The way I see it, the price people are prepared to pay is the 'right price' if nobody buys it because of the price tag, then it obviously isn't the right price.
