Children "play", this activity is for the most part mimicing adults in a variety of fashions. Once a person reaches adulthood, pretending is no longer a valid option, however, Libido - an essential part of the human psyche, dictates that forfeiting the rights to any kind of earthly pleasures is not possible.

Thus, fantasizing and day-dreaming is born as a substitute. You still "play", you just do it mentally and you focus your attention on slightly different areas of everyday life.
