boss battle mode....interesting :
As someone who regularly leads the pack 3/4 of the way through a game of Mario Party, only to suffer through The Great Re-Distribution of Wealth in the last five turns, I've got mixed feelings about the upcoming release of Mario Party 9 for the Wii.
But I'm doing my best to keep an open mind, as Mario Party 9 seems to be bringing some new tricks to the equation.
There's 'Party Adventure', which is a new game mode that, "rewrites the Mario Party rule book by allowing four people to move through the board in one vehicle."
Apparently players take turns as Captain of the vehicle by hitting Dice Blocks to move the party forward, hoping to land on lucky spaces. This "helps to streamline gameplay and keep everyone involved in the action", which seems like more code for further leveling the playing field. But there do seem to be some strategic elements at play here, including finding "the best routes and positions during your turn, while also pushing your opponents into trickier spots."
So we'll see how that turns out.
As far as a raw accounting of content goes…Of all these mechanics, 'Boss Battle' seems the most interesting. The idea of squaring off against classic Mario bosses competitively strikes a nice balance between cooperation and Mushroom Kingdom Darwinism.
Mario Party 9 includes 80 brand new Minigames, accessible to all Mario fans and which will find players making pizzas, escaping haunted mansions, and even racing snowmobiles.
Boss Battle is a brand new Minigame where up to four players must put their differences aside and combine their powers to defeat a series of classic Mario boss characters to collect Mini Stars, leading to a final showdown with Mario’s ultimate nemesis, Bowser. Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a team game though, while you may need to work together to defeat the bosses, you will win Mini Stars depending on your ranking and the amount of damage you have dealt to each boss. Deliver the final blow for a bonus that increases your chances to win.
New Mini game modes also allow you to play Mini games without having to complete a board, ensuring you can always enjoy the action, as and when, you like. You and up to three of your friends and family can hone your skills at any Mini game in Free Play mode, or try the Extras mode that includes Goomba Bowling and the puzzle-based Castle Clearout.
All in all, I'm sure the latest in the video board game series will play like all the others, which is to say it'll be infuriatingly random, mostly unfair and borderline un-American… and I'll almost definitely buy it.
Mario Party 9 comes out March 11 in North America, March 2 in Europe.
